I was talking with a fellow trader yesterday and he was just casually mentioning about the lackluster returns he is getting in his investment (investing for last 18 yrs)
Based on the conv we had, wanted to share some things that came into my mind now

1. Many folks talk about the right attitude for getting successful in the markets. Why that 'right' attitude is needed?
Attitude is how we deal with the inevitable adverse situations we face frequently in the mkts - handling the constant 2 steps fwd & 2 steps backward 😊

Irrespective of the profession, we have seen every pro going through long flat times. As it is impossible to stay on top of our game 100% all the time, slumps are inevitable.
Once we have dug ourselves out of a hole, no matter how long it takes, we know we can do it again (3/n)
If we had reduced weight once, we know that it can be done (even if gain back some) again.
Trust me - this is an extremely important weapon (that knowledge) to possess. If we have done something once, it is a repeatable act. This knowledge can make us very stronger 👍

2. Traders usually have difficulty in separating the reality of the losing trade from the psychological sense of feeling like a loser. At some level, many traders equate losing with being a loser 😟
This creates lot of agony, anxiety and frustration to the trader

Consequently, it interferes with their decision- making process and their P/L is just a blank check written against their self-image/esteem.
Hence, it is imperative that we understand that a losing trade/set of losing trades does not equate us to be a loser.

3. Many folks react differently when they are under pressure. They get tensed and judgement is often impaired. Many talented pro athletes cannot make it as they choke when the pressure is ON. Like the jinx SA cricket team carries during pressure matches. They choke

This is why one could be a brilliant analyst but can be a lousy trader. Consistency is far more important than brilliance 😊
As a trader, we should strive for consistency in what we do & take the performance pressures out of our mind. All successful pros do this naturally

4. Ok - fair enough....but lets say that we are following a methodology consistently (keyword here) and making money..How do we make more money? By taking more leverage? a big NO 😱
Rather, we need to increase the number of lots we trade in commensurate with the acct size

Essentially, we should not over-leverage but trade more lots. Proper (even under-leverage) leverage is the key to having longevity in trading
5. It is too easy to lose money than make money in trading.Many folks think that they enjoy trading but in reality, they don't 😊

Trading is downright boring (profitable trading, i mean 😀), feels lonely during the day, mentally exhausting with little or no structure/security wrapped around it. But there are numerous patterns ready to be exploited by a prudent trader 😊
