The reason why the Church is so strict about avoiding graphic, sexually explicit media isn’t because She has some weird arbitrary fixation about sex as opposed to violence, gore, etc. It doesn’t even necessarily have anything to do with aesthetics at all. It has to do with how exposure to graphic, sexually explicit material in particular impacts the human person in a very unique way. Sexual content is the only category of media that activates its corresponding appetite upon exposure to it. This isn’t the case for violence or gore. When most people watch a horror movie, they don’t necessarily feel any violent impulses stirring up from within them. It doesn’t arouse any bloodlust, except for maybe some psychologically unhinged individuals. For most people, violent content can be seen while being detached from any desire to commit acts of violence. This is simply not the case for sexual content, and for that reason, it must be treated with an exceptional degree of caution, especially for people who are unmarried (even for the married, though, at the very least any and all visual depictions of sexual content would become near occasions of adulterous sins) Therefore, if you’re unmarried, you have absolutely no right to knowingly and willingly allow for that appetite to be activated or aroused, because it’s impossible for the activation of that appetite to be fulfilled by its proper object, namely, spousal love. Outside of this context, therefore, it is always a near occasion of grave sin. Even if the sexually explicit media in the abstract contains aesthetic value, that doesn’t change what it’s doing to the person who engages with it. It still remains a near occasion of sin and it is primarily for that reason that the Church prohibits this kind of exposure.
