Why US–Russia Rapprochement Matters

Geopolitical: A settlement over Ukraine could reshape European security and global power equations.
1. Three Lessons for India:-
1. US–Russia Hostility Is Not Permanent
India should explore opportunities for US–Russia cooperation rather than treating their rivalry as inevitable.
Example: Trump–Putin Alaska Summit (August 2025); Trump announced easing sanctions on Russian diesel supplies to American and global markets until April 2027.
India's interest: Reduced US pressure over Russian oil imports and defence purchases.
2. Russia Values Engagement with the US
Moscow follows pragmatic diplomacy despite ideological and strategic differences.
Example: Putin's offer of investment opportunities in Russian energy, Arctic development and minerals; revival of high-level engagement through Riyadh talks (February 2025).
Lesson: India should pursue interest-based diplomacy rather than permanent alliances or antagonisms.
3. European Security Is Vital for India
Europe is an important partner in India's trade, technology, investment and defence sectors.
Example: The Ukraine war has disrupted European security; Russia seeks sanctions relief, while Europe fears exclusion from a possible US–Russia settlement.
India's role: Promote Russia–Europe dialogue and a sustainable security architecture in Eurasia.
2. Challenges for India
Strategic uncertainty: Sudden US–Russia accommodation could alter existing power equations.
China factor: US–Russia rapprochement could reduce Moscow's dependence on Beijing.
Energy security: American secondary sanctions and tariffs threaten India's Russian oil trade.
3. Way Forward
Strategic autonomy: Maintain independent ties with the US, Russia and Europe.
Multi-alignment: Strengthen issue-based partnerships without rigid bloc politics.
Peace diplomacy: Encourage negotiations on Ukraine and a broader Eurasian security framework.
