We often think of gluttony as just eating too much, but classical philosophy and theology view it as a capital vice. A root that sprouts specific, destructive habits. According to St. Thomas Aquinas, when our physical appetites run unchecked, they give birth to five distinct “daughters”:  *Dullness of Mind: Overindulgence clouds clarity, leaving reason sluggish and unresponsive to higher, spiritual things.  *Unseemly Joy: An uncontrolled, superficial euphoria driven purely by sensory satisfaction rather than true contentment.  *Scurrility: A lack of restraint in behavior and humor, leading to inappropriate or coarse banter.  *Uncleanness: The loss of discipline over bodily impulses, opening the door to further physical self-indulgence.  *Much Talk: A restless mind spilling over into unrestrained, empty speech.
