In the 1960s, scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory developed and operated the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment, a revolutionary reactor using liquid fuel and molten salt instead of conventional solid uranium fuel rods and high-pressure water. The technology ran for thousands of hours, including experiments with uranium-233 bred from thorium. At the center of the story was Alvin Weinberg, a pioneering nuclear scientist who believed molten salt reactors could provide a safer path for nuclear power. But as the United States committed itself to conventional light-water reactors and other nuclear technologies, Weinberg's warnings about reactor safety became increasingly unwelcome. In 1973, he was removed as director of Oak Ridge. The molten salt program eventually disappeared from the American nuclear agenda. Decades later, aerospace engineer Kirk Sorensen rediscovered the forgotten Oak Ridge research while investigating nuclear power for future lunar missions. The old reports, experiments, designs, and operating data helped inspire a new generation of interest in thorium and molten salt reactors. Then China entered the story. A new molten salt reactor in the Gobi Desert revived technology that had been largely dormant since Oak Ridge shut down its experiment in 1969. The story raises a much bigger question: did nuclear power take the wrong technological path? This documentary explores the history of thorium, Alvin Weinberg, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, molten salt reactors, uranium-233, the Aircraft Reactor Experiment, the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment, the politics of nuclear energy, and the modern revival of thorium reactor technology.
