In Rise of The Dollar Empire: How America Dethroned Europe, veteran author and researcher Kerry R. Bolton makes the definitive argument that decolonization was a deliberate objective of the United States to destroy the political independence of the European powers, rather than an inevitable result of modernization and postwar realignment. Contrary to the common belief that American foreign policy during the Cold War aimed to prop up colonial empires as part of an anti-communist crusade, Bolton contends that American diplomats, bankers, corporations, and intelligence agencies had extensive ties with anti-colonial forces across Africa and Asia. He further shows how these American actors materially aided anti-colonialist forces in their struggles against European empires.
Bolton reveals the sordid history of the relationship between the United States and movements such as the Mau Mau in Kenya, the FLN in Algeria, the FRELIMO in Mozambique, and the African National Congress in South Africa, many of which engaged in brutal attacks and massacres against Europeans and other populations. Instead of defending European possessions, people, or interests, American influence and state power decisively sided with anti-colonial figures and organizations wherever it could, including even openly Communist groups, to dismantle colonial empires in the pursuit of economic globalization.
