âWisdom cannot be imparted. Wisdom that a wise man attempts to impart always sounds like foolishness to someone else ... Knowledge can be communicated, but not wisdom. One can find it, live it, do wonders through it, but one cannot communicate and teach it.â -Herman Hesse

The fabric of society is certainly regressing. But the fact that everyone carries around a powerful computer with access to all kinds of information theoretically makes us "smarter," albeit not "wiser."
It is a strange dichotomy, I would like to think that the great minds of our civilization would have been able to wield such a vast flow of information with greater clarity and intellectual alacrity. But I think also that is merely wishful thinking.
Perhaps the access to information in such daunting degrees is a corrupting influence as much as power corrupts.

When I was a young man I believed that if technology was progressing, then society was progressing. End of story.
My baseness was only surpassed by my blindness!
âWhat about ancient peoples?
They were naive, and didnât understand how nature worked.
âWhat about the peoples of the Middle Ages?
They were backward heathens.
âWhat about present day people who donât have access to the technology you are accustomed to, Ed?
They are all backwards too!
For a brief time I even held contempt for the Amish people. Why would anyone want to live that way? Canât they see what a wonderful world the miracles of technology have given us?
But as Iâve grown older I no longer hold this view, because over the decades Iâve witnessed technology progressing, but the fabric of society regressing!
Technology is certainly a driver, but it isnât the only driver. There are many other drivers too myriad to mention here that are essential to progressing a beautiful society beyond our wildest dreams!

If Iâm not mistaken one of the main themes of Burgessâ book and the movie was to make Alex âA Clockwork Orangeâ, â a man conditioned so severely that he wouldnât even have the free will to chose his actions be they good or bad, violent or non-violent.
Total compliance to the system!

âTo every man upon this earth
Death cometh soon or late.
And how can man die better
Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers,
And the temples of his Gods.â

Yesterday my wife and I went to a friend's house for a BBQ and beers, our first social outing in a while. We don't discuss politics and we had a great time. The street was full of buntings, Union Jack flags and some houses even had pictures of the Queen in their windows.
As Morgoth pointed out, this veneer of patriotism is just that; it is temporary, the flags will be taken down and the horrors will return shortly, but for the first time in a long while, there was a feeling of joy seeing national identity openly expressed in public, even if just on the material level. It's not much, but I really appreciated seeing it.
Take the good moments when you can.
