“We thank before we think.” – Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks zt”l As our friends in America mark Thanksgiving, we extend our appreciation to everyone around the world who contributes to The Rabbi Sacks Legacy – whether by reading Rabbi Sacks’ writings, watching his videos, participating in our initiatives, or generously supporting us to ensure his legacy lives on. In these challenging times for Israel and the Jewish people, we can be thankful that we are united in our determination to heal our fractured world, and we express gratitude to the brave soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces, standing firm in the face of adversity. Covenant & Conversation: Chayei Sarah This year's series is based on videos Rabbi Sacks zt"l recorded in 5771 (2010–2011). These timeless messages are accompanied by a new Family Edition, written by educator Sara Lamm, to inspire intergenerational learning. 🟣 View, read or listen to Rabbi Sacks on "Abraham: A Life of Faith" at https://www.rabbisacks.org/covenant-conversation/chayei-sarah/abraham-a-life-of-faith/ 🟡 Explore the Family Edition at https://www.rabbisacks.org/covenant-conversation-family-edition/chayei-sarah/abraham-a-life-of-faith/ Both editions are available in ready-to-print PDFs and in multiple languages. ⚫ Tonight we commemorate the 85th anniversary of Kristallnacht. Rabbi Sacks said: "It was the most ominous sign of what was to come. But it had another dimension no less terrifying: 267 synagogues were burnt. Thousands of Torah scrolls, Judaism’s most sacred objects, were desecrated and thrown into the flames. Suddenly it became clear that the Nazis were intent not only on killing Jews. They sought to kill Judaism itself. They failed. The Jewish people, tiny, vulnerable, lacerated, having stood face to face with the angel of death, still survives, and prays, and gives thanks to God. Somehow, Judaism outlives every attempt to destroy it. Its symbol is not the fierce fire that burns synagogues and sacred scrolls and murdered lives. It is the fragile flame we, together with our children and grandchildren, light in our homes throughout the year and every week for Shabbat, singing God’s story, sustained by our hope. We will never forget those who died in the Holocaust, and we will never stop being who we are and living our faith with pride." The third annual Sacks Conversation, marking the yahrzeit of Rabbi Sacks zt”l, took place last week at Carnegie Hall in New York. The theme was “To Heal a Fractured World,” and the event included words from Gila Sacks, Rabbi Sacks’ youngest daughter, who drew wisdom from the words of her late father to give strength at this time. We share part of her speech here, and the full event can be viewed at https://www.rabbisacks.org/sacks-conversation/
