I watched Swades 20 years after its release and India hasn't changed a bit it seems! To Gen Z born in the 2000s, let me tell you a bit about the cult of Swades. It's a film made in 2004, in which Indian-origin scientist Mohan, who works in NASA, comes back to India to find out that he has been overlooking his country for a successful career and has left his motherland and its problems behind to solve 'humanity's bigger problems' (Elon Musk type problems). The film is full of patriotism, gyaan on the Indian caste system, and a super cocktail of Nostalgia and the 'Ghar wapas aao sanam' syndrome that Indian Cinema was dealing with in the early 90s. (Don't trust me? Read up on India making films for the Indians abroad for making 'Paisa Hi Paisa' beyond the Indian film market, in the late 90s and early 2000s.) We are being forced to celebrate the achievements of multi-millionaires while the plight of the middle/bottom class is being snubbed. But, who am I complaining about the country on a platform where only the top 10% exists? - Where 10-minute deliveries and their business model are given more importance than figuring out even quicker ambulance services. - Where an EY employee's death due to overwork is more important than someone dying out of exhaustion working in a kiln factory working under the blazing sun for hours. - Where rage fizzles with the next success story that you read of a billionaire and dream of becoming the next big thing. India isn't perfect and it will never be, like any other country. And it will take many Mohans to realize this and build for the country.
