| 10 | Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan narrated to us from Abū Yūsuf, who said:
Abū Ḥanīfah had a neighbour who used to say that ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān died a Jew. So Abū Ḥanīfah went to him along with his companions. When the man saw him, he honoured him and said, “For what have you come, O Abū Ḥanīfah?” He replied, “I have come to you with a request.” The man said, “It is granted.” Abū Ḥanīfah said, “So-and-so, the hujjām (someone who practices cupping), seeks your daughter’s hand in marriage.”
This greatly disturbed the man, so Abū Ḥanīfah said to him, “You are not pleased with your daughter marrying so-and-so hujjām, who is a Muslim—yet you are pleased that the daughter of the Messenger of Allah should be under a Jew?”
The man then said, “O Abū Ḥanīfah, I repent to Allah,” and he retracted his statement.

السؤال:
ما حكم من يعتقد من المسلمين أنّ الله تعالى حالٌّ في كل شيء، حتى في الأصنام، ويقول إنّ الأصنام ليست غيرَ الله؟ وهل يخرج بذلك عن دائرة الإسلام؟
الجواب حامداً ومصلياً:
الاعتقاد الحقّ الذي يجب على كل مسلم أن يعتقده هو أن كلّ شيء مخلوقٌ لله سبحانه وتعالى، وأما القول بأنّ كل شيء هو الله، أو أن الله حالٌّ في كل شيء، حتى إنّ الأصنام ليست غيرَ الله، فليس هذا من عقيدة الإسلام في شيء، بل هو اعتقاد باطل ومناقض للتوحيد، وصاحبه خارجٌ عن مِلّة الإسلام.

| 20 | The Nahwī who rivals even Sībawaih!
Ibn Hishām al-Anṣārī (708–761 AH / 1309–1360 CE) was a prominent Egyptian linguist, grammarian, and scholar of the Arabic language during the Mamluk era. Revered for his precision, clarity, and independent thought, he played a foundational role in shaping Arabic grammar and linguistic studies.
He studied under leading scholars such as Shihāb al-Dīn al-Ḥarrānī and Shams al-Dīn ibn al-Sarrāj, excelling in syntax (naḥw), morphology (ṣarf), and Qur’anic recitation. Ibn Hishām developed a structured curriculum for Arabic grammar learners and authored both introductory and advanced texts.
His most significant works include:
- Qaṭr al-Nadā wa-Ball al-Ṣadā and its commentary
- Shudhūr al-Dhahab
- Awḍaḥ al-Masālik
- Al-Iʿrāb ʿan Qawāʿid al-Iʿrāb
- Mughni al-Labīb, his grammatical masterpiece and a key to Qur’anic exegesis
Known for diverging from earlier authorities like Ibn Mālik and the grammatical schools of Baṣrah and Kūfah, he was praised by the historian Ibn Khaldūn, who regarded him as surpassing even the legendary Sībawayh in grammatical precision.
Ibn Hishām’s works remain central to Arabic linguistic education in the Islamic world, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest grammarians in Arabic history.
