حكومات بريطانيا وفرنسا وروسيا اللي دخلت الحرب مو نفسها اللي طلعت منها. هاي الدول صح ربحت الحرب، بس حكوماتها اللي دخلتها للحرب كلها فشلت بالنجاة. فرنسا لوحدها غيرت رئيسها يمكن 6 مرات. بريطانيا مرة. وروسيا أصلًا صار بيها انقلاب 1917 ودخلت حرب أهلية وصارت الإتحاد السوفييتي.

من أهم الأشياء اللي الواحد ينتبه الها لما يقرة عن الحرب هي أنّ ولا واحد من قادة الدول المتحاربة جان مُدرِك لحجم اللي ديصير لحدما صار. الحرب جان يُعتَقَد أنها مجرد حرب أوروبية أُخرى رح تنتهي بسرعة، بس تطورت أحداثها لشي أكبر غيّر شكل العالَم للأبد. والأهم هو أنّ هاي الدول كلها ما جانت عدها فد Master plan معيّنة تمشي عليها لو أهداف واضحة تريد تحققها. الأهداف والخطط جان يتم ارتجالها باللحظة وبالنتيجة "شكل العالَم" اللي نتج عنها جان مُرتَجَل وغير منطقي بشكل جبير... وهالشي زرع بذور النزاعات والحروب اللي استمرت عبر القرن العشرين وصولًا لليوم.

من سخرية القدر أنّ ببداية الحرب بسنة 1914 أغلب القادة العسكريين جانوا يعتقدون أنّ الحرب رح تخلص بسرعة بغضون أشهر... تاليها طولت 4 سنين.
وبآخر سنة للحرب (1918) ذولة القادة نفسهم جانوا يعتقدون أنّ الحرب ممكن تستمر لحد 1920. بس فجأة انهارت دول المحور وانلاصت عليهم وخلصت الحرب.

الحرب العالمية الأولى بالتحديد غيّرت "مفهوم الحرب" كليًا. سابقًا جانت الشعوب تدخل حروب لأسباب مباشرة تتعلق بيها "شخصيًا،" مثلًا من أجل الموارد والأرض والأسباب العِرقية والدينية. بس بالحرب العالمية الأولى، الشعوب لكت نفسها تقاتل غيرها لأسباب ما مفهومة أبدًا ومالها علاقة بيها:
الحرب بدت بالأساس بين صربيا والنمسا. بس روسيا دخلت دعمًا لصربيا، وفرنسا دخلت لأنها حليفة روسيا وبلجيكا احتلوها وصارت طريق سريع، فدخلت بريطانيا للحرب وياهم... ذولة صاروا دول التحالف.
بالمقابل، ألمانيا دخلت دعمًا للنمسا، والعثمانيين شاركوا وياهم لأسباب خاصة، وعالواهس بلغاريا وياهم... ذولة صاروا دول المحور. فجأة، دول أوروبا كلها ومستعمراتها حول العالم اكتشفت أنها بحالة حرب...
