Design got fragmented over time into graphic, UI, UX, motion, brand, just like engineering split into frontend, backend, mobile, and web. The difference is that in today’s AI-driven startups, engineering adapted. Founders hire 10x engineers who can move fast, use AI tools, and ship an insane amount of work without constant handoffs.
Design hasn’t caught up the same way. When you’re building a startup, you don’t have time to coordinate multiple specialists or wait for polished deliverables. You need someone who can think about the product as a whole, make design decisions quickly, and iterate every day.
That means understanding users, product, brand, and business at the same time, not in isolation. This is what 10x designers look like, and why modern startups need them just as much as they need 10x engineers.
