If what I have written and said about true love and how it's steadfast, timeless and immortal, proves to be wrong, consider it never written, And no man has truly ever loved before

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
* it ' s addressed to the fair youth .
* it ' s called the wedding sonnet .
General meaning : the sonnet is about the constanty of true love , true love is timeless , steadfast and an immortal force that never changes and it outlasts death
Form : Shakespearean sonnet
Structure : 3 quatrains and a rhyming couplet
theme : true love , time , beauty , sailing
Rhyme scheme : abab cdcd efef gg
* in the 1 and the 3rd quatrains the poet is going to
say what love is not , while in the 2nd he is going to
define directly what love is ( true love ).
Line 1
Metaphor : true minds " the marriage of the lovers
is compared to the marriage of true minds
Personification : the minds are personified
through the word marriage .
Q/ how does Shakespeare describes marriage?
or how does he present the image of marriage?
A/ marriage is not presented in traditional image
as a legal bond between a man and a woman
it is presented as a union of the minds souls
and not the bodies It is also a union of forgiveness
and understanding
Q/why does Shakespeare describe this
relationship as marriage ?
or Q/why does he refer to it through the word marriage?
A/ true love is just like marriage, it is sacred
noble, holy this is why he prefers to refer to it
through the word marriage, because of its sacredness
Line 2 , not important
Line 3
alter >> change
true love doesn't change if the subject of affection changes
(if there is a change in her attitude)
true love should not change despite this It should be steadfast
*the word alter it reinforces the religious image
presented in the first two lines
Repetition alter, alteration.
Alliteration which, when /w/
Line 4
Bend>it deviates from its course
love should be solid and rigid it shouldn't bend and if it does change then this type of love is shallow, false and superficial

Repetition remove, remover
Alliteration remover, remove /r/
Line 5,6
Tempest >> very strong storm.
*O no! it expresses emotions
Metaphor "ever fixed mark" true love is compared to a lighthouse which stands firm against the storms in the sea and it's never shaken, it's fixed, steadfast and a guide to the ships
Q/ what is the function of the metaphor?
A/ to highlight the image of true love as a steadfast, solid and strong force that offers guidance
Personification: "looks", "shaken" ever fixed mark is personified as a person who looks at the tempest and without being shaken.
Metaphor: "tempest" the problems facing true love is compared to the tempest
Imagery : image of the tempst and the light house .

star which shines and remains fixed in the sky offering
guidance to the sailing ships in the sea

Personification "wandering" the ships are personified by wandering
Imagery we have a navigation imagery
(the image of the north star).
Line 8
The distance between the northern star and the earth can be scientifically measured, but its worth to the sailors is unknown it can't be estimated , because it ' s very valuable . True love is also valuable it can ' t be measured
Personification : " his " the star is personified
Q/ why does Shakespeare use the image of the star
to describe true love ? Or
Q / What are the qualities in the star that Shakespeare
wants to draw Attention to ?
A / the star is one of the most celestial ( heavenly ) and brightest examples of beauty in nature , it shines and it ' s fixed and it offers guidance to the sailing ships .
Line 9
Love can not be fooled by time
Allusion in the word fool to the medieval court clown
Personification
1) "love" is personified as a person who doesn't allow himself to be conquered by time, or to be a toy in the hands of time
