β€’ Acupuncture, as an alternative medicine originated in China 3,000 years ago. It is a technique done by inserting single disposable stainless steel needles at various acupuncture points in the body. β€’ Acupuncture activates small myelinated nerve fibers in muscle, which send impulses to the spinal cord and then activate the midbrain and pituitary hypothalamus. β€’ It has been shown that enkephalin, beta-endorphin, serotonin and nor adrenaline are involved in this process. β€’ There are several methods of acupuncture practiced these are classical acupuncture, Su-Jok, electro-acupuncture, laser and ear acupuncture. β€’ A number of studies have shown, it is very effective in temporomandibular joint disorders dysfunction and facial pain. In view of its beneficial results, several publications on acupuncture have been made during the recent years. β€’ Acupuncture points are situated all over the body. There are totally 12 meridians of which two meridian points are for controlling gag reflex. β€’ It is located on the anterior forearm, two thumb finger width horizontally proximal to the transverse crease, between the tendons of Palmaris longus and flexor carpi radialis. Here perpendicular insertion of the needle is done up to a depth of 2 mm to 4 mm. Caution must be taken on over penetration since median nerve lies directly beneath this point.

SHAPE MEMORY When a shape memory alloy is in its martensitic form, it is easily deformed to a new shape. However, when the alloy is heated through its transformation temperatures, it reverts to austenite and recovers its previous shape with great force. This process is known as shape memory. The temperature at which the alloy remembers its high temperature form when heated can be adjusted by slight changes in alloy composition and through heat treatment. In the nickel titanium alloys, for instance, it can be changed from above +100 deg.C to below -100 deg.C. The shape recovery process occurs over a range of just a few degrees and the start or finish of the transformation can be controlled to within a degree or two if necessary. SUPERELASTICITY These unique alloys also show a superelastic behavior if deformed at a temperature which is slightly above their transformation temperatures. This effect is caused by the stress-induced formation of some martensite above its normal temperature. Because it has been formed above its normal temperature, the martensite reverts immediately to undeformed austenite as soon as the stress is removed. This process provides a very springy, "rubberlike" elasticity in these alloys. This inherent phase transformation is the basis for the unique properties of these alloys -- in particular, shape memory and superelasticity.

β€’ Antiseptic mouthwashes contain Chlorhexidine Gluconate, which is a kind of antiseptic chemical which stops the growth of bacteria. β€’ Because of this nature of its properties, antiseptic mouthwash is often used for mild mouth infection and can also be used to fight bad breath. β€’ They are effective in such that they can prevent the build up of the plaque to a certain extent but this is only effective when you do it together with a right brushing and flossing. β€’ A regular dental visit at an interval not greater than every six months is still needed to have the stubborn plaque or calculus deposits removed. That is the only effective way to keep yourself away from gum infection and bad breath! β€’ Some people thought that antiseptic mouthwash has super power and they used it regularly to delay their dental visit. BUT DO YOU KNOW overuse of these high levels of chlorhexidine products can cause discolouration of the teeth over a long period of time. The stain will be even more pronounced in patients who have heavier accumulations of unremoved plaque. β€’ So instead of removing plaque to look better, your overuse of antiseptic mouthwash which causes stained teeth put you into a more embarrassed situation! If the stain happens, you will have to see your dentist to get them removed by their professional techniques else the stain could stay there forever!
