J Rock n Roll Tolkien began writing what would become the legendarium of Middle-Earth in 1914. By 1926 it had evolved into his first short story and eleven years later, The Hobbit was published to rave reviews and huge sales.
A few months after The Hobbit, Tolkien returned to his publisher with a gigantic manuscript written in quasi-biblical style that he called βQuenta Silmarillion.β His publishers politely declined and suggested he work on a sequel to The Hobbit instead.
Tolkien turned his attention to the sequel while editing The Silmarillion. He desperately wanted the two to be published together, but his publishers refused. In 1954, Lord of the Rings was finally released.
Tolkien continued to work on The Silmarillion until his death in 1973. In 1977, his son Christopher convinced the publishers to publish the immense work. It was not well received by critics, but has come to be seen as the ultimate example of fantasy world building.
