In 325 AD, a group of men gathered under the direction of the Roman Emperor Constantine to decide what you were allowed to believe. This was the Council of Nicea. It wasn't a spiritual gathering; it was a political one. Their goal was to unify a fractured empire by creating a single, state-sanctioned religion. To do this, they had to "prune" the existing sacred texts, removing anything that empowered the individual and replacing it with a system of external control.
