On 28 July 1915 the US invaded Haiti starting a brutal 19-year occupation of the country.
Conducted for selfish economic reasons and racist motives, the US waged two brutal wars against the native population, murdering thousands. American corporations were unable to accept Haitian independence while racist elements in US society including slave owners had never forgiven Haitians for launching the first successful Black rebellion against slavery.
France had already forced the freed slaves to pay reparations to their former slaveowners, a ransom Haiti was still repaying when the Marines arrived. Even when US troops left in 1934 Washington retained influence over Haiti's finances until 1947.
+976 years ago today, the US military slaughtered 400 Korean refugees at Nogeun-ri. First airstrikes, then three days of machine gun fire into a railroad tunnel.
41% of the certified victims were children under 15. 70% were women, children, or elderly men.
To this day, the US calls it a "tragedy," refuses to apologize, and has paid the survivors nothing. Not a single soldier was ever punished.

Fidel Castro: "There is no other way but armed struggle"
Today, 73 years ago, the first bullet of the Cuban Revolution was fired.
It was on this day that Fidel Castro led the assault on the Moncada Barracks serving the US-backed Fulgencio Batista dictatorship. The attack, aimed at capturing weapons, backfired. Nine of the revolutionaries died in the fighting. Dozens more were captured and executed by Batista's forces in the days that followed. Castro escaped, and was arrested six days later.
The symbolic and daring action gave birth to the guerrilla organization that later carried the date of the attack on the barracks as its name: Movimiento 26 de Julio (Movement of July 26) better known as M-26-7.

The PFLP's Japanese Guerrilla: Kozo Okamoto, the Red Army Fighter Who Joined the Palestinian Struggle, Dies at 78
Kozo Okamoto, the Japanese Red Army member who joined the PFLP, died Thursday in Beirut at 78. He was Lebanon's only recognized political refugee. The PFLP mourned him as Ahmad al-Yabani, Ahmad the Japanese.
A 24-year-old botany student when the JRA recruited him, Okamoto and two comrades opened fire at Lod Airport on May 30, 1972.
Twenty-six people were killed. His comrades died in the attack. Okamoto was captured, sentenced to life, and freed in the 1985 Jibril exchange.
To the Palestinian left, he was a Japanese Marxist who crossed continents for a cause not his own, the face of what internationalism meant in 1972.
Japan demanded his extradition; Beirut refused.
At his trial, seeking his own execution, he told the court: "When I was a child, I was told that when people died they became stars... We three Red Army soldiers wanted to become Orion when we died."

On 23 July 1921, thirteen delegates met in a house in Shanghai's French Concession and founded a party that would come to rule a fifth of humanity.

They had been sent by Moscow — and one of them was picked by Lenin personally.
(And another thing: the party celebrates its birthday on 1 July. The congress actually opened on the 23rd. The round date was fixed later, from memory, in the 1930s.)

Today in history Carlo Giuliani, an Italian activist protesting 2001's G8 summit, was shot dead by police.
It was the first murder of an anti-globalization protester since 1999's WTO protests, and the student became icon for the left, who saw his murder as a state execution.
In July 19, 1979, the Sandinistas overthrew a dictatorship.
Reagan's answer: a covert war paid for by Saudi Arabia and armed with weapons Israel took from the Palestinians in Lebanon. 5,000 tons seized, exhibited in Haifa, shipped to Honduras in sealed containers. Price tag: $36 million, settled as a "gentlemen's agreement," nothing in writing. Reagan asked King Fahd for the money himself.
The US government admitted all of it in court in 1989, then gave Israel five paragraphs in the official report and classified the rest. The State Department's own volume on those years is still sealed in 2026.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio effectively branded opposition to fascism "a revolt of the weak and cowardly against the strong and good."
This is a declaration of war on antifascism & communism — and it will set the international tone against anything progressive.

While 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were being slaughtered, the CIA had satellite imagery of the bodies piling up. They watched. They did nothing.
Why? Because the massacre served a purpose: justifying NATO intervention and carving up the Balkans for Western profit.
Today, those same powers mourn Srebrenica while enabling Gaza's genocide.

Rheinmetall is no bystander. Der Spiegel reported Germany cleared 10,000 rounds of its 120mm tank ammunition for Israel, to replenish stocks spent in Gaza. In June 2024 UN experts named the company directly, warning that firms arming Israel risk complicity in acts that may amount to genocide.
The former Pierburg plant is being converted to make casings for 155mm NATO artillery munition — the first weapons built in Berlin since 1945, in a working-class district next to a public park.

54 years ago today the Mossad assassinated Ghassan Kanafani inBeirut. He was a communist and revolutionary socialist, the spokesman of the Marxist-Leninist PFLP, and the man who tied Palestine toVietnam, Cuba and Algeria as one struggle.
The line that holds his whole politics:
"The Palestinian cause is not a cause for Palestinians only, but a cause for every revolutionary, wherever he is, as a cause of the exploited and oppressed masses in our era."Read that carefully. Kanafani is refusing to let Palestine be walled off as a private tragedy. He puts the Palestinian refugee in the same trench as the striking miner, the colonised peasant, the worker anywhere under the boot of empire. Israeli forces killed the communist Palestinian revolutionary Ghassan Kanafani on this day in 1972.
Everyone knows his iconic interview — "a conversation between the sword and the neck" — but have you seen this rare footage?

The original film, "Resistance, Why?," was burned by right-wing Lebanese militias after production in 1971, before it could be released, and was restored only between 2019 and 2021.
Kanafani was already one of the most prominent Palestinian voices before that famous interview. The Mossad assassinated him with a car bomb, and he served as spokesperson for the Marxist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine while never once wielding a gun himself.
