That country is Morocco, a North African nation with a strong Arab cultural identity. Morocco made history last July at the 2026 World Taekwondo World Cup Team Championships in Chuncheon, where its women’s three-member team claimed the gold medal. It marked Morocco’s first-ever championship title at an international Taekwondo competition. Morocco has long been strongly influenced by France, and when forming its national team, the country has traditionally appointed coaches from France and other European nations. While Morocco has continued to improve its competitive level within Africa, competing against strong nations such as Tunisia, it has yet to win a gold medal on the global stage. Morocco has also participated consistently in the Olympic Taekwondo competition from the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games through the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, but has yet to secure an Olympic medal. Against this backdrop, Morocco made an unusual move last May by appointing Lee Dong-wan, a former South Korean Taekwondo athlete with experience coaching at the national-team level, as head coach of the Moroccan national team. Since Lee took charge, the Moroccan national team has shown noticeable improvement and a more competitive presence at international tournaments. Among the athletes who have demonstrated the strongest performances since Lee’s appointment is Amina DEHHAOUI. In June, Dehhaoui won a bronze medal in the women’s −57 kg division at the Rome 2026 World Taekwondo Grand Prix Series in Italy. She followed that achievement with another bronze medal at the recent Muju Taekwondowon 2026 World Taekwondo Grand Prix Series.
