Configure UFW to only allow specific IPs? Hello, I'd like to secure my server. I have Nginx reverse Proxy and Portainer running and accessible over the internet. Canonical Rejection (no feedback after take-home test) Guys I applied for the Linux cryptography and security engineer position and got rejected after the take-home assessment round. From other posts, I have seen that you typically get the take-home test after an HR call. But my stages went like this: written assessment -> IQ test -> take-home assessment. So I did 3 rounds with them without talking to a human. They rejected me with a template email that they send to everyone. I expect at least some feedback after a non-trivial take-home assessment and multiple rounds. They said they can't provide feedback because of the large volume of applicants (that seems unlikely. I see this position posted on LinkedIn every week and it gets 3 applicants on a good week). Can any of you check my assessment and give me some feedback on it, please? I know you shouldn't accept take-home assessments, especially without even receiving a call from them. be for me. ​ 5 - LMDE5 Cinnamon - Almost perfect. 6 - Nobara KDE - had to retry KDE! - I fixed the audio - later an update crashed & I rebooted, mistake! 7 - Fedora 38 Gnome Wayland - wanted to try wayland & a DE I never really used much & a new Base distro. - Audio was ok, but had to fix the audio levels/volume. Everything was ok until a recent update that broke everything & got me tired of trying to fix, so I wiped the drive. ​ And now (on SSD #1 - LMDE5 Cinnamon) & SSD #2 : 8 - Debian 12 Cinnamon/KDE(x & way)/Gnome(x and way) - see the DEBIAN 12 Section for more infos in this one. ​ All the distros that crashed, I've tried to fix them by going from Wikis to Forums to subreddits to StackExchange & many google searches. After usually 2-3 days (couple hours per day) without success, I'll just wipe the drive & install a new OS. That's why I always keep 2 different distros now. All this in the span of 1 1/2 year. Might have try a couple more but not long enough to really say that I "lived" in it. ​ # Conclusion: I really love Linux and found a new home in it. I don't mind trying to solve problem, it keeps me learning new tricks. I don't play to much with the distros, only a couple customizations & theming here and there (global theme/icons/cursors & shell themes/functionalities). But I can't believe every distro I try will eventually & without notice, break. To this day, I'll never completely remove Windows for that reason. I've been running Windows for more than 20years and never got the many problems Linux has gave me (tough love here, cause only use Win for games I can't manage to get working in Lutris). Maybe the DE are the problems, but I have absolutely no interest, with 3 big displays, to switch to a tiling manager & I don't have the knowledge to create my config for it. ​ What was your experience and do you have any wisdom that might guide me through my Linux journey ? https://redd.it/14wettw @r_linux

Why only this one? Hello everyone, This is going to be a long one. But I'll explain the basic of it in the first paragraph. ​ Why only LMDE5 Cinnamon is the only distro & DE I don't have any bad experience with? (Fedora 38 Gnome Wayland, was also doing great until an update completely broke it and I couldn't recover from it). Can someone maybe have an idea? Curious to hear if anyone got similar problems that only one type of distro/DE seems to be fine for you. *** I mainly want to start a discussion & not having anyone really trying to troubleshoot my linux issues, but any advice is welcome. That's the summary. ​ # The TLDR part : So first here my pc specs: \- Motherboard: MSI x570s Tomahawk Max Wifi \- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X (32) @ 3.980GHz \- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti (EVGA FTW3) \- RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200 \- 3 Monitors: 2x 32" 1440p 165Hz & 1x 1080p TV for video/movies \- Keyboard: Wired Razer BlackWidow Elite (not in use atm) & Reddragon Horus K618 Wireless \- 3 SSD (SSD #1 Windows 10 | SSD #2 First Linux | SSD #2 Second Linux) // Nothing cutting edge here \\\\ ​ I'd say I'm an advance PC user but no expert (did some light programming many years ago). I will use google/reddit & other ressources to help me fix my issues with linux. The most common problem I encounter is with my audio (onboard). Once again only the 2 distros mentionned (LMDE5 Cinnamon & Fedora 38 Gnome Wayland) got it to work out of the box. All others can't play audio from video files without many packages install & settings modifications which may not work properly (crackling noises even at 50% volume - low volume when everything is at 100%). These problems will happen with KDE most of the time and also Gnome Xorg or Waylong on other distros. I really love KDE, but all the customizations seems to make it pretty simple to break if to much is modified. Gnome ... I get used to it without manking it look like KDE, but not my prefered DE and Cinnamon is really basic but I managed to customize it to something I kinda like. As of now, I'm not interested in other DE, but might try some in the future. # DEBIAN 12: With the release of Debian 12, I tought ... why not just go Debian all the way & install Cinnamon/KDE & Gnome and switch DE from time to time. Guest what? ... Only Cinnamon works ok, but not as good as LMDE5. \- Little bugs with Cinnamon on Deb12 : Wireless Keyboard not detected - only works when plugged in. Had to install "alsa-utils" & "alsamixergui" to solve my audio problem, it did not selected the right card and haven't manage to fix the audio levels yet. \- Gnome Xorg & Wayland ... glitchy as hell, can't even set my displays position properly (proprietary drivers are installed) & also audio problems that alsa-utils & alsamixergui can't seems to solve. (Visual Glitched all around in Activities view) \- KDE Xord or Wayland ... oh well, this one is a pure nightmare with my displays, I set one 32" screen as the default (let say left one) but everything needs to be clicked on the Right 32" screen. (ex, a popup appear on left screen, I need to imagine the box positioned on the right monitor and try to target the OK button.) & of course, audio problems that I can't fix. ​ # A little recap of the distro I've tried from the beginning : 1 - Mint Cinnamon (Ubuntu based) - was going fine! After an update, a dependencies check asked me to delete unused one, which I did. Mistake NEVER to be done again. Was to new in linux to try to fix this. But it's at the same level as LMDE5 for the most part. Then, I wanted to try something else. ​ So I went ARCH : 2 - Arco Linux KDE (Arch based) - first time having the audio problem - Totally broke after a while. 3 - Xero Linux KDE (Arch Based) - same problem as Arco 4 - Arch KDE - audio fixed - I problably messed up something and was never able to re-enter the OS. (I'm no TTY expert) From here I started to think that KDE was my problem so went back to cinnamon but this time on Debian Base Mint. And also thought that a rolling release might not

For those using Wayland and trying to compile programs in C, do not make my mistakes. (I broke Flatpak and Snap) I’m running Fedora 38 and I’m just now learning to program in C, and compile source code. I tried to compile this code I found online (tetris in C in 200 lines) and it was saying it couldn’t find ‘ncurses.h’. I looked it up and I was supposed to dnf install ncurses-level-ncurses or something like that, the dashes might’ve been underscores. The compile didn’t work anyway and I didn’t care enough to keep trying it, so I just moved on and uninstalled ncurses-level-ncurses. Then Snaps and Flatpaks completely stopped working on Wayland so I switched to Gnome on Xorg. I reinstalled that package and Wayland worked perfectly again. If for whatever reason you install that package, do not uninstall it because it’s got some dependency in it for running Flatpak and Snap packages on Wayland. https://redd.it/14w3iz0 @r_linux

enable pam to allow running child process as different user. i don't want to sudo or anything to do that. i want my current user to be able to do that. via adding it to some group or something? also, i don't just want to su to work. actually, i don't care about su. i want the syscalls to work. i am using golangs SysProcAttr.Credential api. if there a better way in golang like where i can pass password for account or something. its more than enough... for now i am running inside docker. again, in docker, it's running as root by default. so things work out without touching anything. https://redd.it/14vwauw @r_linux
