Her research, publication, teaching and clinical experience includes a focus on the interaction between relational, social, emotional, physiological and systemic developmental factors during pregnancy, infancy, early and later childhood, and the stages of parenthood. In this presentation, Dr. Epstein Gilboa reviews salient concepts that protect healthy developmental continuums as well as risk factors that may impede optimal growth for some children. She explains how some of the measures and policies beginning in 2020 may be considered risk factors that may interfere with developmental tasks required for positive infant, child and parental development. Risk factors noted include parental isolation, distancing from significant support people, ongoing fear and associated stress during pregnancy, birth and the transition to parenthood. These factors may impede the development of sensitive and containing parenting that is required for healthy social and emotional development in infants and children. Additionally, Dr. Epstein-Gilboa reviewed longstanding research that demonstrates the importance of ongoing face-to-face interaction for healthy development as well as the harm associated with the interruption of infants and children’s capacity to experience emotional expression, especially in significant others. She related the long-standing findings to some children’s possible emotional interpretation of engaging with seemingly expressionless faces covered by masks during sensitive developmental periods.
