Texas county judge, family under investigation over voter fraud allegations Sep 6, 2026 | Just the News Texas Attorney General investigators are looking into voter-fraud claims in Zapata County, in southern Texas. In July 2026 they served search warrants at the homes of County Judge Joe Rathmell and his wife Gina, Sheriff Ramon Montes and his wife, the sheriff’s secretary and her husband, a campaign worker, and a justice of the peace. Officers seized phones and bank records. The Election Integrity Unit started the case in September 2025. Affidavits say campaign staff were paid to bring voters to the polls, tell them whom to vote for, watch them vote, and in some cases pay them or reduce fines. The claims cover the March 2024 Democratic primary for sheriff and the March 2026 primaries for county judge and county clerk. Losing candidates asked the state to investigate. Investigators cite witness statements, video, bank records, text messages, and a former Rathmell campaign worker who said he was paid to help voters. No charges have been filed. The affidavits are allegations only. Gina Rathmell said she and her husband have served the public for more than 22 years and will respond through lawyers, not on social media. The 7R-1D map struck down by the MO Supreme Court is back in effect. The ruling of the federal judge is likely to be appealed. The midterm elections are in less than 60 days.
