Something more exact is present: the perception that many inward commitments, some visible and many private, have generated a center stronger than personal possession Who among us has not felt the difference between being gathered by personality and being gathered by seriousness? The first can excite the nerves. The second settles the conscience. The first demands repeated confirmation. The second quietly asks whether one is willing to carry weight. A person speaks more loudly, acts more decisively, suffers more publicly, explains more fluently, and gradually the mind begins to confuse prominence with centrality. It is not the strongest temperament, not the most recognizable role, not the emotional weather of the hour.
