After exploring and imaging SH2-9 in Scorpius the other night, last night I made a stop around IC4603 and IC 4605 in the constellation Scorpius. What a beautiful area of the sky! Next time I will try to frame it better and continue to add more data to it. Last night, I continued to explore the Abell catalog of planetary nebulae. Abell 39 was the target. Abell 39 is an almost perfectly spherical planetary nebula with a low surface brightness. It is located some 6.800 light-years away in the constellation of Hercules and about 4,600 light-years above the Galactic plane — the plane in which the majority of the Milky Way galaxy’s mass lies. Sh2-313 is a vast but faint planetary nebula positioned at about 4.5 degrees east of beta Corvi. Strictly, the nebula is lying in the territory of Hydra just south of Corvus. The nebula has a central star of 9.6th magnitude and an elliptical shape elongated in east west direction with a long axis of 12.8 arc minutes. The reddish H-alpha and the greenish OIII lines are emitted from outer and central parts, respectively. Here is a capture of The Southern Pinwheel Galaxy (aka Messier 83). A barred spiral galaxy located 15.21 million light years from Earth in the southern constellation Hydra. With a spatial diameter of about 55,000 light years, or roughly half the size of the Milky Way, M83 is one of the nearest and brightest barred spirals in the sky. The Crescent Nebula is an emission nebula located in the constellation Cygnus. It has an apparent magnitude of 7.4 and lies at an approximate distance of 5,000 light years from Earth. I went to bed recording data on the Needle Galaxy. Got up to feed the cats and slewed the scope over to the Lagoon Nebula for about an hour before the sun rose, went back to bed. M97 and M108 M97 and M108 are a pair of deep sky objects separated by approximately 50 arc minutes and located in the constellation Ursa Major. The close pairing is a cosmic coincidence since they are not physically associated with each other. M97 is a planetary nebula in our own galaxy while M108 is a spiral galaxy over ten thousand times more distant. While skies were clear, it was very windy!! By the time I was able to capture 5 good frames of the Monkey Head Nebula, Orion had dipped outta view behind a tree. Not bad for 25 mins of data though. Since I used my L-Ultimate on the Monkey Head, I decided to leave that on and gather some narrowband data on the Needle Galaxy in pic 2. I stacked it with some existing broadband data to see what I'd get. Not bad. We'll see what tomorrow brings weather wise. I'll have to plan my targets better with these minimal opportunities.
