A newĀ supernovaĀ in the Pinwheel Galaxy, akaĀ M101, is the closest to Earth in a decade. Amateur astronomerĀ Koichi ItagakiĀ discovered it on May 19, 2023. TheĀ supernovaĀ should continue to brighten for a few days. It should remain visible to amateur astronomers with backyard telescopes for a few months. Messier 104 (M104), also known as the Sombrero Galaxy, is a majestic unbarred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Virgo. The galaxy has an apparent magnitude of 8.98 and lies at a distance of 29.3 million light years from Earth. It has the designation NGC 4594 in the New General Catalogue. The Sombrero Galaxy occupies an area 8.7 by 3.5 arc minutes in apparent size, corresponding to a linear diameter of about 50,000 light years. The galaxy is inclined at an angle of only 7 degrees to our line of sight and appears edge-on. It is visible in binoculars and small telescopes, but only appears as a small patch of light. 4-inch telescopes may hint at the galaxy’s dark dust lane under exceptionally good conditions, but the dust lane usually requires a 10-inch or 12-inch telescope. The galaxy’s bulge and disk are visible in 8-inch and larger telescopes.

NGC 6820 (also known as Sh 2-86) is an emission nebula that surrounds the open cluster NGC 6823, located some 6,000 light-years away from Earth in the faint northern constellation of Vulpecula (the Fox), near the Dumbbell Nebula (Messier 27) The most striking feature is the trunk-like pillar of dust and gas protruding from the east side of the nebula towards the open cluster, NGC 6823 in the west. The center of the open cluster, which is about 50 light-years across, is about two million years old and is dominated in brightness by many young, bright blue stars, packed in a Trapezium-formed region of about 1.3 x 0.7 light-years across. Outer parts of the cluster, involving pillars of the emission nebula, contain even younger stars.

Last night I pointed the scope to the Southeastern sky in Sagittarius, and collected just over 2 hours of data on M24, the small Sagittarius cloud. Messier 24 (M24), also known as the Sagittarius Star Cloud, is a large Milky Way star cloud in Sagittarius constellation. The Sagittarius Star Cloud lies at an approximate distance of 10,000 light years from Earth and has an apparent magnitude of 4.6. It has the designation IC 4715 in the Index Catalog of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars. Messier 24 is about 600 light years wide and lies in the Sagittarius Arm of our galaxy, the next inner spiral arm to our own. 300s x 32 frames for just over 2.5 hours of integration. Always something new to learn. Today I learned that I basically wasted a session 2 nights ago by imaging IC1318 in rgb with the OptolongL-Pro. Last night I recorded 2.5 hours of IC1318 in narrowband using the L-Ultimate instead. Unfortunately, since I slightly rotated the camera swapping filters, I could not stack both narrow and broadband data without cropping away the field rotation (pic 3). Otherwise, I'm totally happy with what I gathered in narrowband. Things really work well the better the seeing conditions. I had great guiding. šŸ‘šŸ½ 300s x 32 frames for just over 2.5 hours of integration.
