IGP Egbetokin warns Nigerians against unorganized giveaways and funfare
IGP Egbetokin has warned Nigerians against unorganized giveaways and funfares.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM., has raised serious concerns about the unorganized distribution of palliatives and relief items in the country during this festive period. This trend is worrisome and calls for urgent concerns to save the lives of citizens of this country, especially the vulnerable youths and the elderly.
This warning follows a series of tragic incidents that highlight the urgent need for a more structured and effective approach to delivering aid to vulnerable communities and members of the public in general. It would be recalled that on the 18th of December 2024, a tragic incident had occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State, where a stampede at a childrenās fun fair resulted in the dĀ£aths of at least 35 children and left many others critically injĀ„ried.
In the early hours of today, the 21st of December 2024, another tragedy str ck at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, in a similar stampede that occurred during the distribution of food items to vulnerable and elderly individuals. This unfortunate incident led to the d£ath of 10 individuals, leaving many others injured.
A similar incident also occurred at Okija, Ihiala Local Government, Anambra State at a palliative distribution set up by a philanthropist identified as Obi Jackson, which led to the d£ath of several individuals. At the moment, 3 persons have been confirmed dad while many inj„red have been taken to various hospitals for adequate treatment.
The IGP emphasized the d@ngers posed to public safety during these unorganized distributions and funfairs set up by groups, individuals and NGOs, including the potential for stampedes and other incidents that could endanger lives. The lack of a well-defined plan for distributing palliatives has resulted in chaos, leading to long lines and unnecessary confrontations among citizens seeking assistance.
In light of these developments, the IGP has called on government officials, community leaders, and non-governmental organizations to work collaboratively towards establishing a comprehensive and organized framework for distributing palliatives. The IGP has hereby warned groups and organizers of similar events to ensure the involvement of security agencies as negligence on their part is criminal and would not be overlooked, as provided for in Sec. 196 of the Penal Code and Sec. 344 of the Criminal Code, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In addition, the IGP has encouraged the general public who would want to benefit from such distributions to tread with caution, prioritizing their safety, to avoid unforeseen calamities.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterates its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at creating a safer and more structured environment for aid distribution in our communities. Collaborating with relevant stakeholders, the Force aims to prevent future tragedies and ensure such processes are seamless.

Fir£ Razes Araromi Spare-Parts Market In Ibadan; Destroying Good Worth Billions of Naira
A fir£ broke out early Saturday morning, destr+ying properties and goods at the Araromi auto spare parts market in Agodi, Ibadan North East local government area.
Eyewitnesses reported that the blaze began around midnight.
Residents from nearby neighborhoods, including Odejayi and Onipasan, were alerted by thick smoke rising from the market. Local attempts to control the fir£ were unsuccessful, and some individuals exploited the chaos to loot shops, stealing goods worth millions of naira.
Shop owner Karimu estimated his losses at over 25 million naira. He recounted, āI live around Thy Will area in Amuloko. I got a call from a friend around 2:45 AM saying āIso Patiā was on firĀ£. I rushed to the market with a landlord on a motorcycle, but by the time I arrived, the damage was done. I had just received a shipment of auto spare parts. Iāve lost everything and appeal for government assistance.ā
Akinyemi Akinyinka, General Manager of Oyo State Fire Services, raised concerns about looters invading shops during the firĀ£. āDespite our efforts to extinguish the flames, we faced harassment from hoodlums who broke into shops at Araromi Agodi-Gate,ā he said.
The fir£ reportedly started around 2 AM and continued to rage as firefighters struggled to contain it. Akinyinka urged water tanker owners to assist in the response. The cause of the fir£ remains under investigation.
This incident occurred just a day after another fir£ in the Ori-Eru area of Idikan resulted in the tragic deaths of a husband, wife, and their grandson. Reports indicated that five individuals were rescued during that incident.
Additionally, the Oyo State Fire Services recently averted a potential explosion of a gas truck along the Ibadan/Lagos Expressway in Agidigbo. Akinyinka noted that the agency received the fire report at 12:10 PM and responded promptly, managing to control the blaze before it escalated.

NNPC dismisses report of Port-harcourt refinery shutting down after $1.5 billion rehabilitation
NNPC has dismissed the report of Port-harcourt refinery shutting down after $1.5 billion rehabilitation.
The attention of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has been drawn to reports in a section of the media alleging that the Old Port Harcourt Refinery which was re-streamed two months ago has been shut down.
We wish to clarify that such reports are totally false as the refinery is fully operational as verified a few days ago by former Group Managing Directors of NNPC.
Preparation for the dayās loading operation is currently ongoing. Members of the public are advised to discountenance such reports as they are the figments of the imagination of those who want to create artificial scarcity and rip-off Nigerians.
