Bhasker Anand Saletore: The Historian Extraordinaire This is the first episode of a series profiling the life and legacy of Bhasker Anand Saletore, the extraordinary scholar of history who lived from 1900-63. ---- Saletore was in Germany when Hitler came to power and he used to tell us how his teacher was the first to be jailed. Saletore laid great stress on the military and material strength to be developed by any country. He used to make passing references that India currently was not strong militarily and for a weak nation, the ideology of democracy may spell danger. Pat came Chinese aggression in 1962 and we could see how prophetic our professor was. P.V. Kane’s Magnificent Guidance for Serious Scholars of Sanatana Culture and Heritage In the concluding episode of this series, P.V. Kane offers brilliant and encyclopaedic guidance to independent scholars who wish to pursue serious research in the fields of Sanskrit, Indology, Indian culture and heritage. --- In ages past, India was frequently confronted with religious, social and political upheavals. In spite of them all, India has exhibited great vitality in survival, did not give up her agelong quest of truth and always attached the highest importance to the things of the spirit. The present is full of fear and eagerness to destroy the old and construct anew after some patterns quite alien to our traditions and ways of thought and not yet sufficiently tested. --- The whole thing is worth memorising! πŸ™πŸ•‰πŸ›•πŸͺ” https://www.dharmadispatch.in/history/pv-kanes-magnificent-guidance-for-serious-scholars-of-sanatana-culture-and-heritage

The Shattered Landscape of Sanskrit Pathashalas: P.V. Kane’s Lament ----- In the same 1946 speech, P.V. Kane paints a desolate picture of traditional Sanskrit Pathashalas, which had flourished unbroken since the dawn of the Indian civilisation. Here's an excerpt: ----- "In India also signs are not wanting that the study of ancient Indian literature and culture may be on the decline in the coming generations. The old methods of learning Sanskrit are not being patronised by clever students. There is a great fall in the numbers attending Sanskrit colleges and Pathasalas in spite of the lure of scholarships. The most learned Pandits are not often able… to make both ends meet and students of mediocre intelligence mostly join Sanskrit Pathasalas. The number of Pandits of the calibre of Bal Shastri Ranade, Taranath Tarkavacaspati, Pandit Guttulal, Laksmanasastri Dravid, Vasudeva Shastri Abhyankar is fast dwindling. The new type of University graduates cannot take their places." ----- It makes for very depressing reading. Indology will not Flourish Hereafter in War-worn Europe: P.V. Kane’s Prophecy Way back in 1946, P.V. Kane unerringly prophesied that Indology and Sanskrit studies will soon decline and disappear in Europe itself and that it was now the responsibility of Indian scholars to take this endeavour forward. Here is an excerpt: "True research requires learned leisure and is costly, while Indian scholars are themselves poor. It is only Government or bodies like Universities or rich patrons that can provide facilities for study in the above subjects." --- Sure, we got a national Government in 1947. But it was a national Government only in the administrative sense. In its policies and behaviour, it turned out worse than the colonial British Government. We should collectively hang our heads in shame if we have any integrity. P.V. Kane’s Cosmic Vision for Writing Indian History Kane had a truly cosmic vision for writing Indian history purely from an Indian perspective. Here is a brilliant excerpt from that: "It is diflicult even for the most learned and most sympathetic foreigner to correctly evaluate an alien cultural tradition. Famous European scholars could not help advancing the theories that the Ramayana was copied from Homer’s Epic, that the Bhagavad Gita was adapted from the Bible, that the art of writing was not known to Panini." Unfortunately, our history textbooks swallowed these wild theories wholesale and poisoned several generations. Kane also gives us a sweeping and grand picture of the atmosphere of history writing prevailing in his time. It is nearly impossible today to even visualise something like this. --- Read the whole brilliant piece! πŸ“‘πŸ™πŸ•‰πŸ›•πŸͺ” https://www.dharmadispatch.in/history/pv-kanes-cosmic-vision-for-writing-indian-history

The Impending Destruction of Sanskrit: What P.V. Kane Predicted in 1946 This is the first part of a new exciting series. ---- On 19 October 1946, Pandurang Vaman Kane delivered a momentous speech at the 13th Session of the All India Oriental Conference at Nagpur. In it, he predicted the impending destruction of Sanskrit learning and Indology after India attained Independence. It has come true in a nightmarish fashion. The speech is largely forgotten but it helps to revive it if we are still serious about preserving even the remnants of this glorious heritage. -- Read and share widely! πŸ“‘πŸ™πŸ•‰πŸ›•πŸͺ” https://www.dharmadispatch.in/history/the-impending-destruction-of-sanskrit-what-pv-kane-predicted-in-1946
