| 4 |  +5The National Bank of Ethiopia (now CBE) is one of the modernist jewels of Addis Abeba. The building was designed by the legendary Architect Henri Chomette and one of his directors at the Ethiopia office, architect Romain Von Seela, and inaugurated in 1963. It houses the National Bank of Ethiopia, consisting of two volumes, one vertical for the administration, and the other, a rural dwelling- 'toucoules' inspired hemispherical hall that is covered with a concrete woven into a skylight, majestic rotunda. The whole, designed according to the golden ratio, is made of concrete-armored aluminum frames and marble floors.

Before it was demolished in the past days, it was maintained along the businesses it housed, Shewa Hotel, Waliya Stationary & Kaleb Jewellery in 2025.
Nearly 5 months ago, in March, 2026, prominent local journalist, Elias Meseret, via Meseret Media, reported about the demolition plan; however, no action saved the historic building from its unprecedented fate.

| 16 |  +9The British Bible Society was a >120-year-old #Piyassa's historic landmark built during King Minilik II's reign in the early 1900s. It was first owned by the British and Foreign Bible Society to translate, print, distribute, and store the #Bibile in Ethiopia. Probably designed by a British Architect (builder), characterised by #Tudorian #architecture; steeply pitched gable roof, decorative half-timbering, massive masonry chimney, & groupings of small-paned leaded-glass windows.
Later, it was converted to #ShewaHotel and a private residence, reportedly owned by the families of one of early Addis Abebaβs key builders, the Armenian Minas Kherbekian. After Minas' families rebranded the building, it remained an epicenter of the times for local authors, elites, painters, & foreigners residing in the city, before it was nationalised by Derg in 1975.
