A mysterious submarine death Let’s harken back to some old-school scares. In 2017, researchers claimed to finally solve the mystery of the H.L. Hunley, a hand-cranked submarine used by the Confederate army during the Civil War. Their findings were cool and all, but what really blew us away was the mystery itself: All eight members of the crew died seated at their battle stations. The sub was, for the most part, intact, and there was no sign that they had made any effort to evacuate or pump out water. None of them suffered broken bones. New Type of Battery Can Charge 10x Faster Than Lithium-Ion Models Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are basically everywhere, powering everything from smartphones to notebooks, earbuds to gaming devices, and so much more. But while the convenience of this ubiquitous (and Nobel Prize-winning) battery chemistry has radically changed the way we use and charge portable technology, lithium-ion is far from perfect. The performance of lithium-ion batteries degrades over time, and sometimes flaws in the battery cells can lead to overheating and dangerous fire hazards – with companies sometimes having to issue urgent recalls for products that can explode without warning. Your ancestors had bigger brains than you The lost volume, on average, would be roughly equivalent to that of four ping pong balls, says Jeremy DeSilva, an anthropologist at Dartmouth College in the US. And according to an analysis of cranial fossils, which he and colleagues published last year, the shrinkage started just 3,000 years ago. Amy Balanoff, who studies brain evolution at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, says that brain tissue requires a lot of energy to grow and maintain, so a species is not likely to evolve a large brain unless it needs it. Think of parasitic creatures that rely on relatively stable environments and resources, she suggests. Lampreys have notoriously small brains of just a few millimetres long, for example. What's cleverer, anyway, to think – or to survive? What is dark energy and dark matter? If it can be explained in simple language yet in detail? 27% of the universe is made up of a mysterious substance dark matter and 68% of invisible form of energy dark energy (the rest only 5% is visible ordinary matter). These two things do not interact with electromagnetic waves and light. So these are completely hidden and invisible. However, they have a strong gravitational effect on objects in space, which is why their presence in space is predictable. -Dark matter attracts other objects toward it by exerting gravitational force. The amount of dark matter in each galaxy is enough to hold all the objects in the galaxy. It is responsible for the structure of the universe. -Dark energy, on the other hand, pushes objects away by repelling them through a reverse-gravitational force. It is responsible for the expansion of the universe. The dark energy within the gap of the galaxies in the universe increases the speed of expansion at a rate of 72 km/s per 3.09× 10¹⁹ km expansion between the two galaxies. That is, the universe is expanding at an accelerating speed due to this invisible dark energy! We know that black holes bend light around the event horizon. But black holes alone do not bend the light. The gravity of dark matter is so great that it can bend light around galaxies. Which effect is known as gravitational lensing. However, the true nature of dark matter and dark energy is still unknown. Many think that dark matter can be made up of some sort of ‘exotic particles’. -It is possible that our Milky Way galaxy might be living on the top of a shadow galaxy made up of dark matter without us even noticing it. Scientists have been able to create dark matter maps. The way they think dark matter is hiding. Dark matter might be holding the parallel universe. Gravity May Play a Tiny But Important Role in The Microworld of Particle Physics Launch yourself from a great enough height and it won't take long to see which would win in a battle between gravity and the forces that bind solid ground. Gravity's relative weakness, at least compared to the strength of electromagnetism and the nuclear forces, appears to limits its power to phenomena on the vast scales of planets and galaxies. Astronomers Detect Another Mysterious Ghostly Circle in Extragalactic Space The discovery of a giant, ghostly circle in extragalactic space is bringing us closer to understanding what these mysterious structures actually are. The so-called odd radio circle, named ORC J0102-2450, joins just a handful of previously discovered space blobs. Given the low sample size, the new discovery adds important statistical data that suggest these objects could somehow be related to galaxies. It’s impossible to burp in space! When you burp on Earth, gravity keeps down the solids and liquids from the food you just ate, so only the gas escapes from your mouth. In the absence of gravity, the gas cannot separate from the liquids and solids, so burping essentially turns into puking. @Sci_Strangeries

Mystery of the star Betelgeuse’s strange behavior finally solved! Betelgeuse is usually among the brightest stars in the sky, but in December 2019, its intense twinkle mysteriously dimmed. The dramatic change set scientists abuzz: Perhaps Betelgeuse was at the end of its life and could explode in a supernova brighter than the full moon. Yet in August of this year, NASA announced a far less extraordinary explanation for its suddenly shadowed face: The star burped. Observations by the Hubble Space Telescope revealed that the star likely sent out a superhot jet of plasma that cooled as it whipped outward. The process formed a cloud of stardust that could have blocked Betelgeuse’s light from eager earthbound viewers. Carbon Monoxide Poisoning (Explanations for Ghosts?) In 1921, a doctor named W.H. Wilmer published an odd story about a haunted house in the American Journal of Ophthalmology. The family who lived in this haunted residence, called the H family in the medical literature, began experiencing weird phenomena when they moved into an old house—hearing furniture moving around and strange voices in the night, feeling the presence of invisible specters. They reported being held down in bed by ghosts, feeling weak, and more. As it turned out, a faulty furnace was filling their house with carbon monoxide, causing aural and visual hallucinations.
