Another recommendation if you are traveling. Let’s say you are going to India, for example. Don’t just go to all the touristy spots and do guided tours. Explore on your own, get lost, go outside of the big cities and the tourist zones and interact with the locals. Take a train or a bus to a random village, see how the people there live, try and stay for a night. Offer to help the people in the village with their daily chores, humble yourself and learn from them and learn some of the language. Immerse yourself in the local life. You will get the most of your experience traveling like this.

Traveling like this can be daunting, of course something can go wrong, and something almost certainly will go wrong. But that’s a part of the adventure and you will grow from it, become more independent, wiser, more of a man. One of the first things God says to Abraham in the Bible, is a call to adventure. “Now the LORD had said unto Abram, get thee out of thy, and from thy kindred, and from thy fathers house, unto a land I will shew thee.” For a long time travel was seen as a coming of age rite. In Europe, from the 16th to the 18th century, Western Europe had what was called “the grand tour” where British and French noblemen, as a coming of age rite, would travel all across Europe, or even to their colonial possessions in Africa and further afield.

At no other point in history has traveling from the US to somewhere as far as India or Japan, on the other side of the earth, been so accessible. One paycheck is a plane ticket ANYWHERE you’d like on this planet. If you have 500$ handy, then voila, a few hours later hypothetically you could be in a place completely unrecognizable from the place you currently live in, in ALL aspects. Traveling like this will make a man out of you. You are going into the unknown with NONE of the safety nets you have at home, you are far from your family, with no one to hold your hand and guide you. If something happens it’s up to YOU to solve it. You get robbed? Have your money stolen? Lose your passport? Get lost? It’s up to you to figure it out.

The better path in my opinion is TRAVELING. I’m not talking about a week-long vacation to a beach resort. I’m talking about REAL travel. REAL exploration and adventure. Get a job, save up some money, it doesn’t need to be a lot, get a friend who’s like minded and if you can’t, no big deal, go alone. I recommend you go somewhere wildly different from your own country. If you are from North America for example, don’t go to another English speaking country. Push yourself far outside of the limits of what you know, try South America, Africa, Asia. Travel from destination by train, bus, hitchhike, etc. Stay in hostels and cheap accommodations, sleep outside. The soul of a young man is Nomadic and Adventurous, why during your precious youth would you confine yourself to one place? The world is your oyster.

TRAVEL If you are a single young man like myself, there’s nothing else I will advocate for more than traveling. One of the worst things you could possibly do in my opinion is to go straight into college or university once you get out of High School. Locking yourself in and committing yourself to something for at least four years of your life in the prime of your youth seems like something extremely unintuitive. I have seen so many people, ESPECIALLY after the COVID lockdowns and the switch to online schooling burn out and drop out of school. A complete waste of precious time and money all for nothing.
