✨🇷🇺 On September 6, Russia’s Irkutsk Region celebrated the Day of Lake Baikal. Located in Eastern Siberia on the border of the Irkutsk Region and the Republic of Buryatia, this true jewel of the planet fascinates visitors with its unique and stunning beauty. Key Facts About Lake Baikal: 🔹 Lake Baikal is the oldest lake on Earth, with an estimated age of 25 million years. 🔹   Shaped like a giant crescent moon, it is the largest freshwater reservoir on Earth, holding approximately 22% to 23% of the world's unfrozen surface fresh water. 🔹 Lake Baikal is the world's deepest lake, reaching a maximum depth of 1,642 metres, with its bottom plunging 1,167 metres below sea level. It ranks seventh globally in surface area, making it comparable in size to the Netherlands. 🔹  Lake Baikal was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. Rich Biodiversity: It is home to more than 2,000 species of plants and animals, roughly two-thirds of which are endemic and found nowhere else on Earth. 🔹 The summer high season spans from May to October, offering activities like hiking, swimming and yachting. Winter brings entirely unique experiences, such as skiing, dog sledding, and ice skating on the frozen lake from late January to mid-April. 🔹 Olkhon Island is Lake Baikal's largest inhabited island, with its name's origin debated between Buryat words for "wooded" (oikhon) or "dry" (olhan), while the last aligns with the island's lack of rivers and creeks. #DiscoverRussia

🇺🇳 From September 7 to October 7, Geneva will host the 63rd Session of the UN Human Rights Council. The Session is expected to address a broad range of issues on the international human rights agenda, including: • protection and promotion of economic, social and cultural rights, • ensuring the right to development, • protection of children, • combating discrimination against women, • advancing the interests of indigenous peoples, • preventing the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights, as well as other thematic issues. At Russia’s initiative, a high-level thematic discussion will be held to mark the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the International Covenants on Human Rights. The Council will adopt the outcomes of the Universal Periodic Review of the national reports of Belgium, Denmark, Latvia, Namibia, Niger, Nicaragua, Mozambique, Palau, Paraguay, Seychelles, Solomon Islands, Singapore, Somalia, Sierra Leone and Estonia. At the initiative of the EU, the Council will once again consider a politicised and highly confrontational draft resolution on the human rights situation in Russia, aimed at extending for another year the mandate of the relevant HRC Special Rapporteur, Mariana Katzarova of Bulgaria. ❗️ Russia’s stance on this matter remains unchanged: we do not recognise the mandate of this illegitimate special procedure, and any form of interaction with it is unacceptable to us. The Russian delegation, which will participate in the Session as an observer, intends, as before, to make active use of all available opportunities to overcome confrontation and promote a unifying agenda, as well as to foster among international partners an understanding of the importance of establishing constructive international dialogue on the promotion and protection of human rights, with due respect for the national, religious, cultural and historical characteristics of every state. A number of special side events will be organised to present Russia’s approaches to the most pressing issues on the session’s agenda to the international community.

🎖 81 years ago, #OTD in 1945, the Allied Victory Parade was held in Berlin following the defeat of Nazi Germany in #WorldWarII. After the Victory celebrations in Moscow on 24 June 1945, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin proposed that the United States, Great Britain and France hold a joint military parade in Berlin to honour the shared victory in the war. The historic event took place near the Reichstag building and the Brandenburg Gate, where the last battles of #WWII happened before Berlin was captured by the Red Army. ⭐️ The Allied Command was represented high-ranking military officials: from United Kingdom – by Deputy Commander of the British Forces in Germany Major General Brian Robertson; from the USA – by Commander of the 3rd Army General George Patton; from France – by Commander of the French Occupation Forces in Germany and on the Rhine General of the Army Marie-Pierre Koenig. The Soviet Union was represented by Commander of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany Marshal Georgy Zhukov, who was also entrusted with reviewing the parade, commanded by British Major General Eric Nares. ✨ Altogether, 2,000 Soviet troops and 3,000 troops from the Western Allied forces participated in the march. Many Russian historians refer to this event as "the forgotten parade," as it is rarely highlighted in Western historical narratives. #Victory81

⚡️Comment by Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s meeting with US Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner (September 6, 2026) 💬 Yury Ushakov: At the instruction of the President of the United States, his representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited Moscow on September 5 to continue the dialogue on resolving the crisis in Ukraine and to discuss other pressing issues. This was their eighth visit to our country. President Vladimir Putin received the US representatives. At the very beginning of their conversation, he publicly praised this channel of mediation and the role played by the American negotiators. He also conveyed his best wishes to President Donald Trump and thanked him for his efforts to advance a settlement in Ukraine, as well as for his sincere desire to help achieve a swift and mutually acceptable outcome. What else can be added to what the President himself has already said? The conversation lasted more than three hours – three hours and ten minutes, to be precise. It was substantive, constructive, exceptionally frank, and conducted in an atmosphere of trust. The discussion, which covered extremely serious matters, continued both during the working portion of the meeting as well as in an informal setting over dinner. As regards the substance of the discussions, the Russian side provided clear and comprehensive assessments of the situation developing in the course of the special military operation. ☝️ In particular, the Russian side highlighted the significant advances made by the Russian armed forces in the combat zone, expressed confidence that the set objectives would be achieved, and, obviously, stressed the need to address all the root causes of the conflict. Our President reaffirmed his commitment to continuing joint work with the American side to seek political and diplomatic solutions. Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, for their part, undertook to draw on the observations and assessments conveyed to them personally by the Russian President regarding possible avenues toward a lasting and peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine during their meetings in Kiev tomorrow. Incidentally, our American colleagues had made considerable preparations for this trip. In addition to reiterating their traditional interest in bringing the hostilities to an early end, they put forward a number of considerations concerning possible ways of reaching a settlement. ❗️ It is also worth noting that the Americans took particular note of a point emphasized by our President: namely, that the Kiev regime has already ceased to conceal its true nature, having begun the reburial of some of the most prominent Nazi criminals. The talks were not confined to an exchange of views on resolving the Ukrainian crisis. Economic issues were also discussed, including the prospects for major Russia-US projects that could be mutually beneficial to both sides. Overall, it can be said that the talks were timely and highly beneficial to both sides. It was confirmed that the Presidents of our countries will further maintain personal contact, and that the work conducted through Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will also continue. #RussiaUSA

#AmbassadorSpeaks ✍️Comment by Ambassador of the Russian Federation to South Africa Roman Ambаrov on the 20th Anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship and Partnership between Russia and South Africa On 5-6 September 2006, Russian President Vladimir Putin paid the first-ever visit to the Republic of South Africa. This landmark event marked a turning point in the development of Russian-South African relations and gave fresh impetus to their consistent strengthening. 🇷🇺🇿🇦 The signing of the Treaty of Friendship and Partnership in Cape Town laid a solid legal foundation for long-term cooperation. Moscow and Pretoria demonstrated their shared commitment to systematic and strategic cooperation, based on common approaches to key international issues, mutual respect for national interests and the principles of the sovereign equality of states. 🤝 Over the past two decades, our countries have progressed from political rapprochement to a comprehensive, strategic and multifaceted partnership encompassing energy, mining, science, space and human capital development. Trade and economic ties, interregional cooperation, as well as humanitarian and cultural exchanges occupy an important place on the bilateral agenda. A significant role in advancing these areas is played by established intergovernmental and interagency mechanisms, including the Joint Intergovernmental Committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation, the Russia-South Africa Business Council, and joint commissions on scientific and military-technical cooperation. A key milestone in advancing a constructive agenda in world affairs was the adoption in 2013 of the Joint Declaration on the Establishment of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which elevated relations between our countries to a new level. The document reaffirmed the parties’ commitment to developing cooperation “in the political, economic, trade, scientific, technological, cultural and other fields”, creating a foundation for further expansion of practical cooperation. Regular contacts at the highest and senior levels continue to demonstrate the strong momentum of the bilateral agenda. 🌍 Of particular importance are the joint efforts of Russia and South Africa on the international fora, primarily the #UN, #BRICS and the #G20, where our countries advocate strengthening multilateralism and building a more just system of international relations. People-to-people ties remain an integral part of our mutually beneficial partnership. We are interested in further expanding educational opportunities for South African students in Russia, developing academic exchanges and strengthening cultural ties. Creative and educational initiatives contribute not only to expanding practical cooperation, but also to fostering a deeper mutual understanding between our peoples. This anniversary is not merely an occasion to look back. It is also a point of reference for the future. We see considerable potential for deepening cooperation in high technologies and digitalisation, as well as for further developing energy, scientific and technological and investment cooperation. An important priority is also the expansion of direct contacts between Russia’s regions and South Africa’s provinces, creating additional opportunities for implementing joint projects. As a more just and multipolar world order takes shape, Russia and South Africa, united by their shared commitment to the principles of the sovereign equality of states, can set an example of mature, responsible and mutually beneficial dialogue. ☝️ We are convinced that the spirit of the Cape Town agreements of 2006 remains a reliable compass for the continued advancement of our countries towards one another — in the interests of the well-being and prosperity of our peoples, as well as ensuring security and stability both on the African continent and on the international stage. #RussiaSouthAfrica #AmbassadorAmbarov

🇷🇺🇺🇸 Russia's President Vladimir Putin received in the Kremlin Special Envoy of the President of the United States of America Steve Witkoff and entrepreneur, founder of Affinity Partners Jared Kushner (Moscow, September 5, 2026) 💬 Vladimir Putin: Colleagues, I heartily welcome you to Moscow. The situation we are to sort out today is, of course, a difficult one. But before we begin, I would like to ask you to convey my best wishes and words of gratitude to the President of the United States, Donald Trump. While he realizes that he is facing a difficult situation, he nevertheless does not stop his efforts to resolve it and to contribute to the settlement of the Russian‑Ukrainian conflict. Today, we will discuss all its components and all its aspects, and for our part, we are also ready to inform you about our view of the situation. As you informed us, I know that you are planning to go to Kiev after visiting Moscow. In any case, of course, no matter what happens next, contacts of this kind are certainly always beneficial. And here, of course, the quality of mediation and trust in those who are engaged in it are very important. I’d like to tell you that we find it comfortable to work with you, and, of course, we have a very high level of trust during this work. 🤝 We are glad to see you. Welcome. *** We received the request through official channels — both through the intelligence services and through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — to stop the strikes on Kiev. I issued the respective order, and since midnight on September 5, these strikes on Kiev have not been carried out. I would like to note that the Ukrainian side has also significantly reduced — by an order of magnitude — the strikes on the territory of the Russian Federation, including Moscow. The Ukrainian authorities have published their call for a broader three‑day truce, but we have never agreed on this with them. Yet we will do everything in our power to ensure the safety of the negotiation process and the mediators, represented by you and, perhaps, by those accompanying you. #RussiaUS

✨🇷🇺 35 years ago, #OTD in 1991, Russia’s "Northern Capital" reclaimed its historic name, #SaintPetersburg. The city was founded on 27 May 1703 by Peter the Great and named after Saint Peter. 👑🌊 The tsar considered this symbolic: a city bearing such a name would serve as Russia's gateway to the Baltic Sea and Europe. Spreading across 42 islands with more than 340 bridges, it quickly earned the nickname "Venice of the North". Due to its geology, the city also features one of the deepest subway systems in the world, with stations plunging up to 86 metres below ground. In 1712, the country’s capital was relocated from Moscow to St. Petersburg, where it remained for over 200 years. The city became a global cultural epicentre and the backdrop for literary masterpieces like Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment. Following the outbreak of World War I in 1914, the city's name was changed to Petrograd to remove German influences. In 1924, following Vladimir Lenin’s death, it was renamed Leningrad. 💎 Throughout these shifts, the city's crown jewel remained the State Hermitage Museum. Housed in the Winter Palace, it holds over 3 million treasures, famously guarded since the 18th century by an official "army" of museum cats. In 1918, the Soviet leadership moved the capital back to Moscow. Later, in 1991, a historic referendum finally restored the name Saint Petersburg. 🌅 Today, its enduring spirit is best witnessed during the annual White Nights from late May to mid-July, when the sun never fully sets over the Neva River. #DiscoverRussia

🤩 Foreign leaders who toured the USSR: Part II 🇫🇷 Charles de Gaulle In June 1966, French President Charles de Gaulle made a historic 11-day visit to the USSR, charming locals by giving a speech in Russian from a Moscow city balcony. During his trip, he toured university and theatre sites in Moscow, became the first foreign leader to visit the scientific hub of Akademgorodok and watched rocket launches at the Baikonur Cosmodrome. He also toured the Hermitage museum in Leningrad and visited a completely rebuilt Stalingrad, a city he had last seen in ruins during World War II. 🇫🇮 Urho Kekkonen During his frequent visits to the Soviet Union, Finnish President Urho Kekkonen focused on informal diplomacy through hunting, traditional saunas and a close friendship with Soviet Prime Minister Alexei Kosygin. In the summer of 1969, the two leaders toured Lake Baikal and went on a gruelling 200-kilometer hike across the Caucasus Mountains. Despite being 69 and 65 years old, they successfully climbed the difficult Klukhor Pass and hiked down to the Black Sea coast. 🇩🇪 Willy Brandt In 1971, West German Chancellor Willy Brandt visited the Soviet Union for a unique "beach-style" diplomatic meeting with Leonid Brezhnev in Crimea. Over two days, the two leaders held informal negotiations while swimming, taking boat trips and chatting. Since the chancellor arrived unprepared for such a casual meeting, Brezhnev famously accommodated his German guest by lending him a pair of swimming trunks from his own wardrobe. 🇨🇦 Pierre Elliott Trudeau In 1971, Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau visited the closed Soviet city of Norilsk to study buildings constructed on frozen ground (permafrost). Even though the weather dropped to a freezing -15°C after they had visited warmer southern cities, almost the entire local population came out to greet them. Trudeau toured buildings built on stilts and watched youth ice hockey at the Ice Palace. He later returned to the Soviet Union in 1984 as a retiree, travelling the Silk Road through Armenia and Georgia. 🇺🇸 Richard Nixon In 1959, US Vice President Richard Nixon spent three days in Sverdlovsk touring major factories, going down into a copper mine and giving a toast to world peace in Russian. He returned to the USSR in 1974 as president to hold an informal summit with Leonid Brezhnev in Crimea. During this second trip, the leaders held meetings on a motorboat and in a coastal cave, while Nixon's wife, Patricia Nixon, explored famous local landmarks like the Swallow's Nest castle. #DicoverRussia

🤩 Dear friends, Did you know that between 1927 and 1974, several foreign leaders took surprisingly casual trips to the Soviet Union. Along with touring secret military bases, they went on mountain hikes, visited bathhouses and even held beach meetings in borrowed swimsuits. By slipping away from their security guards, these leaders got a rare look at everyday Soviet life. 🌐 Today, we’ll share the stories of 10 foreign heads of state who toured the USSR: Part I 🇦🇫 Amanullah Khan, Afghanistan In 1927, King Amanullah of Afghanistan became the first foreign leader to visit the Soviet Union. In Moscow, he dined with Joseph Stalin and toured cultural and industrial sites. He then went to Leningrad, but he did not like his royal accommodations at the Winter Palace. For a more relaxing pace, he went to Crimea, where he drove himself around and talked to local people like a regular tourist. Finally, he ended his trip in Georgia by visiting beaches and tea plantations. 🇮🇳 Jawaharlal Nehru In June 1955, Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and his daughter, Indira Gandhi, took a 16-day tour of the USSR. They travelled to many major Soviet cities to study local industries and farming. Key moments of their trip included touring a steel mill in Rustavi and reviewing farm development in Altai, where local workers gave Nehru a symbolic bag of harvested grain. 🇪🇬 Gamal Abdel Nasser Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser visited the USSR seven times, starting in 1958 as the first Arab leader to do so. On his broad tour of the Soviet republics, he explored Moscow's nuclear centre and giant movie theatre, alongside stops in cities like Kiev, Leningrad and Stalingrad. While his early trips focused on politics, his later visits were for his health, as he frequently returned for medical treatments at a Barvikha sanatorium and the radon springs in Georgia. 🇻🇬 Harold Macmillan In winter 1959, British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan made a historic 10-day visit to Moscow, where he amused reporters by wearing a traditional white fur hat. During the trip, he stayed at a dacha with Nikita Khrushchev, rode a Russian horse carriage, and travelled to Leningrad to tour a shipyard and observe local elections. Although he privately complained in his diaries about being forced to watch the ballet nearly every night instead of visiting a Russian circus, the trip was an important cultural exchange. 🇨🇺 Fidel Castro In 1963, Cuban leader Fidel Castro took a historic 40-day tour of the USSR. He began in Murmansk, where he skied and tried fish dumplings and went on to receive unique honours, like speaking from the Lenin’s Tomb and visiting a secret missile base in Severodvinsk. Castro balanced formal activities like hunting and watching the ballet with meeting ordinary people, which included passing out cigars to factory workers in Bratsk and taking an unescorted walk through Moscow. #DiscoverRussia

⚡️ In connection with Ukrainian statements aimed at creating direct threats to civil aviation, the competent Russian authorities are in contact with the leadership of the International Civil Aviation Organization (#ICAO) in Montreal. An urgent appeal on the matter has been sent to ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar. ❗️ The Russian Federation has issued a strong protest over Ukraine’s reckless terrorist actions, which run counter to international law. The NOTAMs issued by the Ukrainian authorities alleging that Russian airspace is unsafe have been categorically rejected. They have no legal force, distort the actual situation and mislead users of Russian airspace. We called on the ICAO Secretary General to condemn the Kiev regime’s unlawful interference in civil aviation and the direct threats it is creating, and to take targeted steps to put an end to these actions by Ukraine. ☝️ The Russian Federation remains firmly committed to ensuring the safety of civil aviation.

🇷🇺 326 years ago, #OTD in 1700, the Mining Directorate (Rudokopny Prikaz) was established by Peter the Great. It was Russia's first state body dedicated to ore exploration, the establishment of new metallurgical enterprises and the training of specialized professionals. Its creation was driven by the increased demand for metals in Russia due to the Great Northern War against Sweden (1700 – 1721). 🚢 As a result of this focused state policy, Russia soon eliminated its dependence on foreign metals. By the end of Peter the Great's reign, the country had transformed into a major exporter of iron and copper. #DiscoverRussia

🇷🇺 152 years ago, #OTD in 1874, brilliant Russian surgeon Alexander Vishnevsky was born. He is renowned for creating a unique medication known ever since as "Vishnevsky liniment." This balsamic liniment has been widely used to treat wounds, burns, skin ulcers and suppurations. The medication was extensively utilized by the Soviet army during #WorldWarII. The so-called "Vishnevsky Triad" (local anesthesia, procaine blockade and dressings with an oily-balsamic emulsion) saved lives of hundreds of thousands of Soviet soldiers. ✍️ Alexander Vishnevsky authored over 100 research papers on clinical surgery, urology and neurosurgery, and he was the first to describe the role of the nervous system in the inflammatory process. His most distinguished student was his son, Alexander Vishnevsky Jr., who went on to become a renowned Soviet military surgeon. #DiscoverRussia

🤝 September 3 marks the Day of Solidarity in the Fight Against Terrorism in Russia. This date is linked to the tragic events that took place on September 1-3, 2004, in Beslan, North Ossetia. During the "First Bell" ceremony marking the beginning of the new school year, a terrorist unit seized School №1. The attack resulted in the loss of 334 lives, including 186 children. ⚠️ The horrific terrorist attack on March 22, 2024, at the Crocus City Hall concert facility, which affected numerous innocent civilians, once again emphasised the need to consolidate international efforts in the fight against terrorism. We urge the international community to work together to combat terrorism, with the United Nations playing a central coordinating role. This must be done without any double standards or hidden agendas, in accordance with the UN Charter, specialised universal conventions and protocols, UNSC resolutions, and the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. 🇷🇺 Russia remains firmly committed to a principled struggle against terrorist threats. We advocate for more intensive efforts to disrupt ideological, material and financial support for terrorism and we oppose the attempts of Western countries to undermine the international legal framework for counterterrorism. #StopTerrorism
