Activity Duration Estimation:
The process of estimating the required work periods (days, weeks, etc.) to complete project activities with estimated resources is called activity duration estimation, the methods of which are:
1- Expert Opinion
2- Analogous Estimation
3- Parametric Estimation
4- Three-Point Estimation
5- Group Decision Making Technique
1- Expert Judgment
Project experts can provide the information needed to estimate the duration of activities or the proposed duration of activities from previous similar projects with the help of past records.
2- Analog Estimating
This technique relies on the actual duration of previous similar projects as a basis for estimating the duration of the current project. If necessary, the estimated duration of activities can be adjusted with this method, considering the known differences in the current project.
This method is used when accurate information about the project details is not available, and for this reason this estimate is also called Top-Down Estimate.
The speed of calculating the estimate in this method is high, but it is less accurate.
3- Parametric Estimating:
This method uses the relationships between influential variables (such as cubic meters, square meters, meters, etc.) to estimate the duration of activities and is a more accurate technique than the deductive estimation. For example, if the duration of each kilometer of piping with a diameter of 30 inches with certain resources is about 3 days, the duration required for 10 kilometers of piping will be 30 days.
The accuracy of this method depends on the accuracy of the data used.
4- Three Point Estimating:
This method is designed to reduce the risk of estimating the duration of activities in ambiguous and uncertain conditions (there is no previous similar project example). In this method, instead of estimating a single number as the estimated duration of the activity, three numbers are estimated, which represent the probable (tM), pessimistic (tP) and optimistic (tO) states in estimating the duration of the activity, which is calculated by one of the following relationships: 3/(tO+tM+tP) and
(to+tm+tp)/6
5- Group Decision-Making Techniques:
Using group methods (Team Based) such as brainstorming, Delphi, etc. for the interaction of project team members in estimating the duration of project activities is very useful.
By interacting and involving a cohesive team of people who are familiar with the project activity execution techniques in the estimation process, more accurate information is collected for estimating the time of activities and this also increases the commitment of these people to the estimated time of project activities.
β Reserve Analysis:
Sometimes, in order to consider the uncertainty (risk) in the project, a percentage of the estimated time of activities (or a fixed number) is considered as a reserve or buffer. In some projects, this reserve can include all activities, and in others, only specific activities (for example, critical activities) can include this reserve.
