In a film that was filled with horrible atrocities against both classical literature and the art of filmmaking, I have to say, even the parts it should've gotten right were hideously wrong. Anne Hathaway is a beautiful actress who should've been a slam-dunk as Penelope, the loyal wife who holds out in the hope that her husband might return some day, and also as the motivation for Odysseus to get home.
But instead, the character was written as a shrill, middle class liberal divorced single mother—in a word, she was a bitch. It was as though she was constantly on her period during the entire movie. There was zero motherly love between her and Telemachus, if anything, she was verbally and emotionally abusive towards him. She seemed like the kind of wife a man would willingly go off to war to get away from, rather than spend 20 years trying to get back to, let alone want to run off with at the end!
The joyless, lecturing, moralizing, finger-wagging cold feminism of this movie was actually worse than the racial subversion—by a long shot. And that all comes down to Christopher Nolan's writing, which was even worse than his directing.
