Small Grant Competition for EdTech Entrepreneurs The Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship is a 3-year catalytic acceleration program designed to bridge the education gap for underserved young people in Ethiopia. Reach for Change, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, will support the scaling of three cohorts, each comprising 12 EdTech enterprises, specifically targeting initiatives that enhance inclusive learning in Ethiopia. This support will be provided through coaching, funding, networking, and post-acceleration support for two years. Additionally, we will focus on cultivating cross-sector collaborations and enhancing Ethiopia’s national ecosystem and policy for EdTech products and solutions. AAU and Awash Bank Ink MoU for Knowledge Sharing, Talent Development Addis Ababa University and Awash Bank signed a partnership to promote strategy-driven capacity development and create opportunities for their professionals on the 20th of November 2024. Accordingly, AAU’s College of Business and Economics will provide the expertise and skills necessary to further capacitate Awash Bank S in line with the pace of liberalization in the financial sector which would require local banks are able to compete with their foreign peers. Speaking at the signing event, AAU president Dr Samuel Kifle said, in cooperation with Awash Bank, the flagship university will develop an advanced curriculum focusing on the emerging needs of the banking industry, invite Awash Bank professionals to share their experiences; send faculty in externship to invest their knowledge in the industry; and work on common beneficiary projects including advancing technology. Dr Samuel Kifle further said AAU has entered into solid long-term collaboration and strategic co-operation agreements with players in the financial industry as Ethiopia’s first autonomous public university, adding the deal with Awash Bank represents a move from plan to action. Mr. Tadesse Gemeda, Chief Wholesale Banking Officer of Awash Bank, for his part said Awash Bank S.C will provide state-of-the art banking services to the university community and work together in key topics identified for cooperation in areas of the bank’s strategic and R&D needs.

AAU keen to Forge Ties with Brazilian Institutions in Sports, Leisure and Health AAU launched a seminar under the title “BRICS in the Fields of Physical Activity, Health, Tourism, and Leisure: Opportunities for Integration between Brazil and Ethiopia” at the Institute of Ethiopian Studies meeting hall on November 18, 2024. Speaking on the significance of the event, Dr. Alem Mebrat Kiflu, the Post Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Sports Science, said the seminar was planned to foster ties between Brazil and Ethiopia in sports and health, adding the event also offered an important opportunity to find ways to address the scholarly publishing challenges facing the Department’s doctoral students. For his part, Professor Ricardo R. Uvinha, Secretary General of the BRICS Council of Exercise and Sports Science, said the Council was formed to tackle specific concerns of member nations in matters of health and wellness of their citizens. The professor further stated that the BRICSCESS signifies a global alternative coordination of likeminded nations in the promotion of population health through exercise, physical activity, sports, and healthy lifestyles. Fostering ties with Brazil has immense strategic significance considering the Latin American nation’s global position and legacy in the sports arena. Historical records show that  Brazil held the inaugural BRICSCESS conference in December 2017 under the theme Sports Mega Events and Health Promotion: Policies and Legacies in Exercise and Sports Science, after it hosted several other mega sporting events including the 5th International Military Sports Council World Games (2011), the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Confederations Cup (2013), the FIFA World Cup (2014), the Olympic Games Rio (2016), and the Paralympic Games Rio (2016), among others. Department of Sport Science faculty, MA and PhD students, and invited guests attended the seminar.
