Small Grant Competition for EdTech Entrepreneurs The Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship is a 3-year catalytic acceleration program designed to bridge the education gap for underserved young people in Ethiopia. Reach for Change, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, will support the scaling of three cohorts, each comprising 12 EdTech enterprises, specifically targeting initiatives that enhance inclusive learning in Ethiopia. AAU and Inter-Religious Council of Ethiopia Ink MoU to Strengthen Peacebuilding Initiatives Addis Ababa University (AAU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Inter-Religious Council of Ethiopia (IRCE) to work together in the promotion of peace education and peacebuilding on the 13th of November 2024. Samuel Kifle (PhD), President of AAU, stated during the signing that AAU accentuates inter-institutional cooperation dedicated to the enhancement of values, knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviors that contribute to peace among Ethiopian citizens and between groups. Dr. Samuel further said that AAU has a responsibility of supporting religious institutions in order to receive law-abiding, upright and peaceable incoming students as almost 99% of Ethiopians are religious people one way or the other. “In this case, AAU will play a vital role where IRCE does capacity building,” he added. Among others, the partnership agreement includes staff development, sharing or creation of educational materials/resources, and publication of articles on peace processes, peacebuilding and mediation initiatives.

AAU and Moscow Technical University Agree to Bolster, Expand Bilateral Ties On November 7, 2024, a Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics (MTUCI) delegation met and deliberated with AAU president, Dr Samuel Kifle, on ways of deepening and expanding strategic cooperation in key areas of science and technology in which the Russian Federation has made significant strides. “We treasure our partnerships with Russian universities in the fields of mining, space, engineering, physics, and mathematics, where Russia has demonstrated global leadership “, the AAU president assured the Russian partners. There is much Ethiopian universities can learn from their Russian counterparts, Dr Samuel further said, citing the Eastern European nation’ s model of higher education curriculum development which aligns with its culture, history, economy, industry and national aspirations. Dr Samuel said there is further need for bilateral cooperation in the various subfields of medicine, considering the significant Russian advances in healthcare from which Ethiopia’s health system can draw experiences. For her part, Dr Irina Sidorkina, the Vice-Rector at MTUCI said the Russian university is a multidisciplinary institution prepared to share its expertise and capabilities with Addis Ababa University.

AAU Signs Partnership with Russia’s Oryel University to Cooperate on Education and Science Addis Ababa University (AAU) and Oryel State University in the Russian Federation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on multifaceted educational and scientific areas on the 8th of November 2024. The partnership agreement was signed at the AAU main campus, Sidist Kilo, by Dr Samuel Kifle, Interim President of AAU, and Dr Lyudmila Vladimirovna, on behalf of Professor Galina M. Zomiteva, Acting Rector of Oryel State University. The pact between the two institutions focuses on joint research and advanced training in the humanities, social and natural sciences. Student and staff exchange is also an important area covered by the agreement.

Via Ministry of Education The Ministry of Education has endorsed the Five Million Ethiopian Coders initiative and directed the University to facilitate training for academic staff and students. The program consists of the following four modules: 1.Programming Fundamentals 2.Data Science Fundamentals 3.Android Kotlin Developer Fundamentals 4.AI Fundamentals Data Science Fundamentals and AI Fundamentals are mandatory for all staff and students. The other courses may be taken based on individual interest. The program is self-paced and online, with an expected completion period of 7-8 weeks. School of Commerce Hosts Public Lecture on Ethiopia’s Capital Market Ecosystem The School of Commerce, in partnership with the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX) and the Ethiopian Capital Markets Authority (ECMA), organized a Public Lecture on Ethiopia’s capital market ecosystem on November 8, 2024. Solomon Markos, PhD, the head of the School of Commerce, stated in an interview that the purpose of the public lecture is to involve students, faculty, and  scholars  to significantly contribute to the capital market ecosystem as prospective investors, service providers, and issuers. “Through this initiative, we aim to deepen their understanding of how the capital markets operate and demonstrate how they can actively participate in and contribute to the ecosystem”, Dr Solomon said. He further stated that the lecture aims to enhance understanding of the regulatory framework that oversees the Ethiopian capital market and to promote a dialogue regarding the role of the AAU School of Commerce as a significant stakeholder in the engagement and advancement of the capital market. Ms Yodit Kassa, Chief Business Development Officer at Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX), for her part noted that ESX plays a major role in facilitating access to capital and providing  support for capital allocation in a manner that fuels Ethiopia’s economic growth. Ms Yodit emphasized that ESX will enable mobilization of financial resources for both public and private sector institutions while providing investors a reliable platform to invest in an efficient environment.
