Youth Panel Discussion on Conflict, Reconciliation and Peacebuilding On November 1, 2024, students from various divisions of Addis Ababa University participated in a panel discussion on the role of youth in conflict resolution and peace building, featuring a senior official from the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission and a researcher from Social Net Consulting. Mr. Abreham Kebede, the head of project coordination at the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission, said that to enhance the credibility of the national consultation, training focused on capacity building has been conducted with diverse community groups, and a significant number of the nation’s youth are being encouraged to participate. Mr. Abraham indicated that the National Dialogue Commission is engaging the youth of Ethiopia in efforts to foster peace and stability. He mentioned that the youth are structured within the districts from which they are elected, demonstrating significant engagement in identifying and analyzing minor security issues affecting both society and the youth. “They subsequently present their findings to the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission, ” Mr Abraham further said. Ato Tesfaye Salomon, a Senior Researcher and Consultant at Social Net Consulting, emphasized that for conflict to yield a positive and constructive result, the approach to conflict resolution must treat all ideas impartially and without prejudice. He said the process should aim to guide the majority towards a conciliatory position, and it is anticipated that the youth will be instrumental in achieving this success.

Addis Ababa University and Hainan University Ink MOU to Boost Cooperation in Research, Staff and Student Exchange Addis Ababa University (AAU) and Hainan University (HNU) of China signed an agreement to cooperate in key areas of mutual interest on the 28th of October 2024. The agreement sets the stage for a strategic partnership focusing on joint research, education, staff and student exchange as well as community engagement. The pact will extend to include collaboration in the exchange of scholarly publications and scientific information. The MOU stipulates that the cooperation is for an initial period of five years which may be renewed subject to an expression of mutual interest. Dr Samuel Kifle, Interim President of Addis Ababa University, and Professor LUO Qingming, President of Hainan University, signed the partnership agreement.

Turkish Agency Makes Donations of Feminine Hygiene Products On October 30, 2024, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TiKA) donated reusable sanitary pads to AAU, helping to provide hygiene essentials to female undergraduate students who may not afford personal care products. The donation is hoped to help address “period poverty” defined as the lack of access to safe and hygienic menstrual products. Following a vote of thanks to the Turkish Agency for the generous donation, the president of AAU, Dr Samuel Kifle underscored efforts being made by the university’s Gender Office to ensure the inability to purchase hygiene products does not pose a significant barrier to the academic progression of female students. The Minister of Women and Social Affairs, Dr. Ergoge Tesfaye, who attended the donation ceremony, stated that access to sanitary pads for women has significantly improved, adding female students in higher education have not only been able to concentrate on their academic pursuits, but there have also been notable advancements in their health, social interactions, and personal development. Minister Ergoge further said that the women’s Reusable Hygienic Pads, provided with the assistance of the Turkish Cooperation and Development Agency, are designed for reuse over a period of up to two years. Studies report that sanitary pads make female students feel more confident and significantly reduce their class absenteeism.

AAU, Wollo University Ink Deal with Ministry of Mines to Boost Research and Development The Ministry of Mines and the Universities of Addis Ababa and Wollo signed a MOU for cooperation in key areas related to the minerals sector on the 29th of October 2024. H.E. Minister of Mines Habtamu Tegegne outlined six different projects related to research, capacity building and documentation to be implemented in coordination with the higher education institutions for which the Ministry has committed 733 million birr. Highlighting the significance of the partnership, the AAU president, Dr Samuel Kifle, said the parties shared a vision to keep the nation at the forefront of key minerals supply as a backbone of the economy. Working in partnership with the mining industry will help AAU to deliver the skills and innovation vital to realize the potential benefits from the minerals sector to the nation’s economic development, the AAU President further said, adding the partnership aligns with the university’s core mission of sustainable development.

AAU, JICA Host Next Innovation with Japan (NINJA) Startup Acceleration Training On October 22, 2024, the Industry Linkage and Technology Transfer Office of Addis Ababa University, in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, hosted a 10-day training for university students at the Eshetu Chole Hall. Solomon Kiros, PhD, the Director for University-Industry Linkage and Technology Transfer, articulated that a memorandum of understanding has been signed between JICA, AAU, and the Ministry of Innovation and Technology. He said the agreement aims to introduce capacity-building initiatives focused on innovation, incubation, and startups. He noted that the program is designed to provide students with technical training, thereby significantly enhancing their entrepreneurial mindset and fostering their development as business-oriented graduates. Dr Solomon further stated that the training aims to equip students with knowledge that will be advantageous to the nation across various sectors, including education, tourism, mining, agriculture, manufacturing, and information and communication technology (ICT). He mentioned that one hundred and fifteen students from different divisions of Addis Ababa University submitted proposals, of whom the top eighteen who presented the most innovative proposals successfully completed the incubation and startup training. Dr. Hailu Elias, the Dean of the College of Business and Economics, stated that Addis Ababa University is undergoing unprecedented transformation, adding the university ‘s new strategic plan aims to produce entrepreneurial graduates. Betelihem Zewdie, the Director of R & D Group Ethiopia, emphasized that the program serves as a training initiative designed to assist students in transforming their business concepts into strategic plans, as well as effectively identifying and organizing their marketing systems and customer bases. It was mentioned that in addition to Addis Ababa University, Addis Ababa University of Science and Technology, Mekele and Jimma Universities will participate in the trainings.

Addis Ababa University Teams up with AlemFre PinkHouse Cancer Foundation in Cancer Awareness Push Addis Ababa University’s College of Health Sciences and AlemFre PinkHouse Cancer Foundation jointly organized the fourth annual breast cancer 5-kilometer walk in Addis Ababa on October 27, 2024, under the motto Your “strength is my strength”. Dr. Abdurazaq Ahmed, the Director of Clinical Services at the College of Health Sciences and Black Lion Specialized Hospital, said the breast cancer awareness walk is aimed at enhancing community understanding of the disease by highlighting its causes, symptoms, and available treatment options. Dr Abdurazaq further stated that health professionals, educators, and other staff from the College of Health Sciences, government representatives, and other invited attendees took part in the walk. He said, “Throughout the event, a message was conveyed to the community emphasizing that breast cancer is treatable if detected early, prior to reaching a critical stage.” The Minister of Health, Dr. Mekdes Daba, expressed optimism and urged support for cancer patients, adding a national strategy to prevent and cure cancer is being designed and implemented. The Minister of Women and Social Affairs, Dr. Ergoge Tesfaye, for her part explained that a significant number of women are impacted by breast and cervical cancer as a result of insufficient awareness and distractions. Dr Ergoge further highlighted the importance of women getting regularly screened for cancer , noting that early detection and timely treatment significantly increase the chances of successful recovery.
