Gift Given out of Embarrassment is Not Permissible to Accept | Explained by Shaykh al-Uthaymeen
Shaykh al-Uthaymeen:
The person should be afraid that he will not receive blessings for something which he coerced someone to give him. Meaning if you coax someone into giving you something perhaps you will not be blessed in that thing. For this reason the scholars (may Allāh have mercy upon them) say; if you know someone is giving you something as a gift due to shyness or embarrassment it is not permissible for you to accept it. And this is an affair some of the people take lightly.
For example: A person sees someone with something that amazes him. So he takes it, examines it, and says “māshā-Allāh, how nice is this! Can you find this in the store? Where did you get this from? I have been looking for this for a long time, but I couldn’t find it!”
What does he want?
Students: He wants him to give it to him.
Shaykh al-Uthaymeen: They only thing left for him to say is: “Give it to me!” This is coercion. So if he gives you this thing and you know he only gave it to you out of shyness and embarrassment, then it is Harām for you to accept it. Don’t say: “He gave it to me and I didn’t force him”.
It is for this reason those companions (may Allāh be pleased with them) al-Ash‘ariyīn were afraid they would not be blessed in those camels, so they went to the Prophet (sallá Allāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam) and informed him.
Translated by Rasheed ibn Estes Barbee

Translator’s note:
The Shaykh is referring to the following narration:
Zahdam said: We were in the company of Abū Mūsá al-Ash‘arī and there were friendly relations between us and this tribe of Jarm. Abū Mūsá was presented with a dish containing chicken. Among the people there were sitting a red-faced man who did not come near the food. Abū Mūsá said (to him), "Come on (and eat), for I have seen Allāh's Messenger (sallá Allāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam) eating of it (i.e. chicken)." He said, "I have seen it (the chicken) eating something (dirty) and since then I have disliked it, and have taken an oath that I shall not eat it. Abū Mūsá said, "Come, I will narrate to you (that which will allow you to break your oath).
Once I went to the Messenger of Allāh with a group of al-Ash’ariyīn, and met him while he was angry, distributing some camels of charity. We asked for mounts but he took an oath that he would not give us any mounts, and added, 'I have nothing to mount you on' In the meantime some camels from war booty were brought to the Messenger of Allāh (sallá Allāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam) and he asked twice, 'Where are al-Ash‘ariyīn?' So he gave us five white camels with big humps. We covered a short distance, and then I said to my companions;
"The Messenger of Allāh (sallá Allāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam) has forgotten his oath. By Allāh, if we do not remind him (sallá Allāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam) of his oath, we will never be successful."
So we returned to the Prophet (sallá Allāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam) and said,
"O Messenger of Allāh! We asked you for mounts, but you took an oath that you would not give us any mounts; we think that you have forgotten your oath.' He said, 'It is Allāh Who has given you mounts. By Allāh; and Allāh willing, if I take an oath and later find something else better than that; then I do what is better and expiate my oath."

Imaam Muhammad ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhaab (rahimahullaah) said:
ومعناها لا معبودَ بحقٍّ إلا اللهُ وحده؛ (لا إله) نافيًا جميعَ مَا يُعْبدُ مِنْ دونِ اللهِ (إلا الله) مُثْبِتًا العبادةَ له وحدَهُ لا شريكَ لهُ في عبادتِهِ، كما أنَّه ليس له شريك في مُلْكِه
And its meaning is none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah; laa ilaaha (nothing has the right to be worshipped) is a negation of everything which is worshipped besides Allaah. Illallaah (except Allaah) affirms worship for Allaah Alone, and that none is given any share of worship along with Him, just as He has no sharer in His Sovereignty.34
[34]: Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzan’s Explanation:
His saying, “And its meaning is none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah”: the meaning of laa ilaaha illAllaah is not as is said by the people of falsehood: “there is no creator and there is no provider except Allaah”, because this is tawheed-ur-Ruboobiyyah (tawheed of Lordship), the people of shirk agreed to that, but they would not say laa ilaaha illAllaah. He the Most High said:
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ
وَيَقُولُونَ أَئِنَّا لَتَارِكُو آلِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرٍ مَّجْنُونٍ
When it was said to them, “laa ilaaha illAllaah” (none has the right to be worshipped but Allaah), they became proud, and they say, “are we to abandon worshipping our gods for a crazy poet?” [37:35-36]
“Aalihatinaa” means: those things which we worship.
لِشَاعِرٍ مَّجْنُونٍ ..
… in favour of a crazy poet?” [37:35-36]
They meant the Messenger sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, they described him with poetry and madness, because he had said to them, “Say: laa ilaaha illAllaah”, and he forbade them from the worship of idols.
And when he said to them, “Say: laa ilaaha illAllaah”, they said:
أَجَعَلَ الْآلِهَةَ إِلَٰهًا وَاحِدًا ۖ إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَشَيْءٌ عُجَابٌ
Has he made all of the objects of worship a single One to be worshipped? This is something very strange [38:5]
They thought that there were many gods to be worshipped.
So therefore this shows that its meaning is – nothing truly deserves worship except Allaah. Whereas if its meaning were – there is no creator and there is provider except Allaah – then they agreed to that, and they did not question it. So if that were its meaning they would not have refused to say laa ilaaha illAllaah, because they used to say when they were asked, “Who created the heavens and the earth?”, they used to say, “Allaah”. And when they were asked, “Who creates? Who gives provision? Who gives life and gives death and who controls the earth?”, they used to say , “Allaah”. They acknowledged this. So if that were the meaning of laa ilaaha illAllaah then they would have consented to it. However its meaning is, “None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah”.
If you were to say, “Nothing is worshipped except Allaah”, this would be a great error, because then all the objects of worship would be Allaah, High and Exalted is Allaah above this. Rather if you restrict it and you say, “bihaqq” (nothing is deservedly worshipped), then all the objects of worship are negated except Allaah the Perfect and Most High. You must therefore say, None has the right to be worshipped truly, meaning none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah. Then he explained that in accordance with the wording of the saying:
laa ilaaha: is a negation, it negates the right to worship from everything besides Allaah.
illAllaah: this is affirmation of worship for Allaah alone with no partner.
So laa ilaaha illAllaah includes negation and affirmation, and tawheed has to have negation and affirmation both. Affirmation alone will not suffice; and negation would not suffice on its own. There must be negation and affirmation, just as He the Most High said:
فَمَن يَكْفُرْ بِالطَّاغُوتِ وَيُؤْمِن بِاللَّهِ
So whoever rejects the false objects of worship, and truly believes in and worships Allaah [2:256].

The meaning of ‘nothing has the right to be worshipped except Allah’
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
| Shaykh Salih bin Fawzan al-Fawzan (حفظه الله)
Question: The questioner asks what is the meaning of ‘nothing has the right to be worshipped except Allah’? And is this statement sufficient for the person to enter Islam or are there other actions that follow it in order for the person who says it to be Muslim? And what is the difference between a Muslim and a believer?
Shaykh Salih al-Fawzan: The Shahada; the testimony that ‘nothing has the right to be worshipped except Allah’ its meaning is declaration and acknowledgement, and pronouncement. The declaration and acknowledgement is with the heart while the pronouncement is with the tongue that nothing is deserving of worship except Allah the Exalted. It is sufficient for the person to enter Islam. But if he knows the meaning of this statement and works according to what it necessitates then it is sufficient. But if he does not work according to what it necessitates; he does not pray, he does not fast; while he says ‘nothing has the right to be worshipped except Allah’ but he does not pray, he does not fast, he does not perform the pillars of Islam; this person is not a Muslim. This person is judged with apostasy.

Listening to Backbiting is a Sin
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
Explained by Shaykh bin Baz
Question: I am a young woman who hates backbiting and tale-carrying. And sometimes I will be in a group where they are speaking about the conditions of the people and they will begin to backbite and carry tales. I hate this in myself and I loathe it, but I am extremely shy so I am not able to prevent them from that. And likewise I am not able to find a place to distance myself from them. And Allah knows I wish they would involve themselves in speech other than this. Is there a sin upon me for sitting with them? And what is incumbent upon me to do.
Shaykh bin Baz:
You are sinning by doing this (sitting with them), unless you disapprove of the evil. If they accept it from you, then all praises belong to Allah; and if not then it is obligatory upon you to separate from them and to not sit with them. This is based on the statement of Allah the Exalted:
❝And when you see those who engage in [offensive] discourse concerning Our verses, then turn away from them until they enter into another conversation. And if satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain after the reminder with the wrongdoing people.❞ (Soorah Al-'An`ām6:68)
And the statement of the Exalted:
❝And it has already been revealed to you in the Book (this Quran) that when you hear the Verses of Allah being denied and mocked at, then sit not with them, until they engage in a talk other than that; (but if you stayed with them) certainly in that case you would be like them.❞
(Soorah An Nisa 4:140)
And the statement of the Prophet صلى إلله عليه وسلم :
❝Whoever from amongst you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand, and if he is
not able then let him change it with his tongue, and if he is not able then let him hate it
in his heart, and that is the weakest of faith.❞
(Collected by Muslim).
And the verses and hadith containing this meaning are numerous.
And with Allah lies all success.

Relying on Astronomical Calculations to Determine the Beginning of the Month
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
Shaykh Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyá al-Najmī (رحمه الله) said:
“We [only] rely on the naked eye to sight the crescent. We do not rely on astronomical calculations.”
[Min Aḥkām al-Siyām, pg 30.]
Shaykh Ṣāliḥ ibn Fawzān al-Fawzān (حفظه الله) said:
Fixing the commencement of fasting in Ramaḍān based upon astronomical calculations is impermissible. Not only is it the work of man—which is prone to error—but it is also something impossible for everyone to perform.
Moreover, the Prophet (ﷺ) did not command us to fast based upon astrological calculations; rather, he (ﷺ) commanded us to fast based upon the sighting of the crescent.
Whether the crescent is seen with the naked eye or with the aid of binoculars, telescopes, or any other similar mechanisms, this is still considered a sighting. Therefore, utilising such mechanisms to sight the crescent is permissible, not obligatory.

The great scholar, Shaykh 'Abdul-'Azeez Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have Mercy on him) was asked about the permissibility of speaking during the athaan.
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
He replied:
Yes, it is permissible to speak during the athaan, or after it, no problem. However, the Sunnah is to pay attention to the athaan quietly and respond to it. However, there is no harm if someone needs to speak during that, while he responds to the athaan. There is no harm if he returns someone's greeting of salaam, says "yar-hamuk Allaah" to someone who sneezes, or requests something he needs.

Beef is A Disease
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
| Explanation of the Hadīth by Shaykh al-Albānī
Shaykh al-Albāni answers the question
"The milk of the cow is a cure while its meat is a disease. So how do we reconcile between this and the fact that the cow can be used as a sacrificial animal. As it is not possible for the legislation to allow sacrifices from that which is harmful?"
Shaykh al-Albānī:
Yes, it has been authenticated from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) during his farewell pilgrimage, that he sacrificed a cow for his wives.
And it has also been authenticated that he (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) ordered us with the fat of the cow and prohibited us from its meat, because its fat is a cure and its meat is a disease.
The scholars have reconciled between this hadīth and the hadīth of his sacrificing the cow for his wives, by stating the intention behind the prohibition of cow’s meat is only referring to consuming large quantities of it. As for eating it sometimes; there is no problem or any harm in this. And it is without any doubt permissible; because the intent behind the prohibition of beef is to consume large quantities of it; and to use beef as a replacement for the meat of sheep, goats and camels. This is the answer of the scholars.

Smoking Shisha—Hookah Pipe is Haram
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
| The Permanent committee of scholars said:
Shisha pipes, hookah pipes, and smoking are from the evil things, and they are haram due to the harms upon the body and the wealth.
Allah the Exalted said in describing His Prophet Muhammad SallallahuAlaihi waSallam :
❝He makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil.❞
(Soorah Al ‘Araf 7:157)
And it has been authenticated from the Prophet SallallahuAlaihi waSallam that he said:
❝There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.❞
(Sunan Ibn Majah 2341)
Thus it is not permissible to use these things, sell them, or to promote them, just as it is not permissible to open these shops, or attend these shops, or gatherings were they are present; except for the one who has the strength to give advice and to change the evil.
This is based upon the statement of Allah the Exalted:
❝And it has already been revealed to you in the Book (this Quran) that when you hear the Verses of Allah being denied and mocked at, then sit not with them, until they engage in a talk other than that; (but if you stayed with them) certainly in that case you would be like them.❞
(Soorah An Nisa 4:140)
And the statement of the Exalted:
❝And when you see those who engage in [offensive] discourse concerning Our verses, then turn away from them until they enter into another conversion.❞
(Soorah An An’am 6:68)
Included in the general meaning of these two verses are the sinful, evil gatherings in which the commands of Allah and His prohibitions are belittled.
Therefore whoever is present at these gatherings and does not criticize them then his sin is the same as theirs.

Playing the Quran while sleeping; is this permissible?
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
| Shaykh Ibn Baaz
Question: The sister has two questions. The first question she says: Sometimes I feel scared and frightened when I sleep alone in my room, so I have to play the Quran so I can sleep to its verses. Is this permissible?
Shaykh bin Baz: I do not know of any problem with this; because the Quran is a comfort for the believer. And it is remembrance of Allah the Exalted, thus listening to it is worship. Therefore if the person needs to listen to it to remove the feeling of loneliness and to relax his heart then there is no problem with that. And all praises belong to Allah.

Careless with Regards to the Fajr Prayer
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
| By Shaykh Abdur Razzāq al-Badr
Shaykh Abdur Razzāq:
Perhaps some of the people may be frequently immersed in various fields of knowledge, memorization, and studying; but they are negligent, especially concerning the Fajr prayer; they are very negligent concerning it.
If this is an obligation, a great obligation, and it is the greatest pillar of Islām after the two testimonies of faith, and the first affair the person will be questioned about on the Day of Judgment; the first affair the person will be questioned about is the prayer; if the person is negligent concerning it, (negligent concerning) this obligation, then where are the effects of knowledge?!
He misses the Fajr prayer?! While the Companions (may Allāh be pleased with them) as it has been narrated by ibn Mas‘ood, he said:
If a man missed Fajr prayer they would accuse him of hypocrisy. The heaviest prayers upon the hypocrites are the Fajr prayer and Isha prayer.
And during this time of ours, the era of staying awake throughout the night, many people miss the Fajr prayer, and many people pray it alone.
And perhaps some of them spend the night engaged in knowledge based discussions concerning various issues or subjects then he sleeps through Fajr prayer.
If a person spent the entire night with the Qur’ān, memorizing it and reciting it; if this is at the cost of the Fajr prayer, then his staying awake is harām and it is not permissible for him, and he is sinning for staying awake throughout the night.
And the prayer which is neglected the most during this day and time is the greatest of all the prayers without exception. Do you know which prayer it is?
It appears in a hadīth, and Shaykh al-Albāni has declared it hasan in some of his books. The Prophet (prayers and peace are upon him) said:
The best of all the prayers is the Fajr prayer on Friday, in congregation.
The Fajr prayer, on Friday, in congregation. Shaykh al-Albāni declared it to be hasan with this wording.
The (Fajr prayer) on Friday in congregation is now the prayer which is neglected the most. And the Imaams of the Masjids will be asked about this.
This is because the night before Friday, is the night for relaxation, the night to stay awake. The people remain awake until late into the night then go to sleep late, and then they sleep through Fajr prayer.
And the best of them go to the Fajr prayer late, and in lazy fashion. He comes while his head is heavy with sleep, he is tired. Thus he does not perform this prayer as it is befitting.
And if he knows that the Imām of that Masjid is going to recite Sūrah as-Sajdah and Sūrah al-Insān, then he does not come until the end of the second rak‘āt.
Where is the benefit of knowledge if he takes this position with the first thing he will be questioned about on the Day of Judgment?! As for the one who is negligent concerning it then he will be more negligent concerning other affairs.

The ruling on sharing the Udhiyah sacrifice |
Shaykh Salih ibn Fawzan al-Fawzan حفظه الله
Question: Noble Shaykh, we are five youth and we agreed amongst ourselves that we will sacrifice this year, the question, is it permissible for us to share the price of the Udhiyah?
Answer: Sharing the Udhiyah, meaning if they want to share with seven people sharing a cow or a camel with every person taking a seventh, then is no problem with this, this comes in the Sunnah; this is from the Sunnah. As for sharing a sheep, this is not sufficient. This is for the head of household that spends upon his family. One sheep suffices the head of household and his family. As for a group of people in which every person is responsible for himself, or their families and they come together to share a sheep, then it is not correct. This is only allowed with a camel or a cow. A man can share a sheep with his family because he spends upon them thus they share this with him. As for his friends, he does not spend upon them thus they do not share this with him.

And walk not on the earth with conceit and arrogance. Verily, you can neither rend nor penetrate the earth, nor can you attain a stature like the mountains in height. [Surah Al-Israa’ Aayah 37]
Neither can you rend nor penetrate the earth, nor can you attain a stature like the mountains, so how can you be arrogant?!! You a human being – weak and in need; even a tiny thing can end your life. A fly can end your life, so why are you arrogant?! What right do you have to be rude and arrogant towards the people?! Brief Fiqh Reminders – Woe to (the dry) heels, because of the fire!
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.
“Waylun (Woe) to (the dry) heels, because of Hell-fire”.
This hadeeth teaches us the importance of performing ablution properly and that none of the obligatory acts of ablution is to be abandoned, and this is why a threat of punishment is attached to it. The heels have not been mentioned here specifically because the ruling only applies to them, but rather they are mentioned because in most cases they are not washed properly, especially when a person rushes his ablution. This hadeeth has a story related to it in the Saheeh as follows: Abdullah Bin Amr [rahimahullaahu-anhu] said, “We returned from Mecca to Madeenah with the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ), and when we came to some water on the way, some of the people were in a hurry at the time of the Asr prayer and performed ablution hurriedly; and when we reached them, their heels were dry, no water had touched them. The Prophet (ﷺ) said with a loud voice, “Woe to (the dry) heels, because of Hell-fire”.
This word ‘Waylun (woe)’ is a word that indicates threat of punishment. It is said that it is a valley in hell and a great punishment. The mention of heels is not specific in relation to the ruling in this affair, rather if one was to leave other parts of the body which should be washed properly, then this threat of punishment also applies. The threat of punishment here is for the person who did not wash his heels properly and a threat of punishment in the hell fire is not issued except due to a major sin. In a hadeeth reported by Imaam Ahmad and Imaam Abu Dawud, the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] saw a man on whose heels there was a dry spot, the size of a Dirham; so the prophet commanded him to perform ablution again and repeat his prayer, which shows that Salaah is not accepted if the obligatory acts of ablution are left. This hadeeth necessitates a great benefit regarding the status of Salaah in the religion, because when it is the case that the one who performs ablution, goes to the Masjid and prays in congregation at its prescribed time, but then he falls short in his ablution – even on a small spot on his body- is threatened with punishment, then what about the one who does not even pray or abandons the prayer out of laziness?!

Q.137: what is the ruling on piercing the ear or nose of a female infant for beautification?
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
The Answer: the correct opinion is that there is no harm in ear piercing because it coincides with the intentions by which permissible adornment with jewelry is achieved. It is affirmed that the wives of the companions used to wear earrings. It is tormenting, but only slightly and if it is done in the early years it heals quickly. As for nose piercing, I don't know of any statement of the scholars concerning it, but in our view it is a form of mutilation and deformation of the body. It could be that others do not see it as so, therefore if a woman is in a country in which nose piercing is considered beautiful or a decoration then there is no harm in it.

[The effect of the prayer in safeguarding the body and rebuffing disease]

Ibn ul-Qayyim رحمه الله said:
“It has an amazing effect in safeguarding health of the body and the heart and in their strength, and in rebuffing bad elements from them, and no two men are tried by an impairment or illness or test or trial except that the share of the one who prays is less, and his outcome is sounder, and the prayer has an amazing effect in rebuffing the evils of the World...”

Oppressive police officers foretold by Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Explained by Shaykh Uthaymeen
Question:
O noble Shaykh we would like for you to explain this narration, may Allah reward you with good.
Narrated by Abu Huraira, he said the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“There are two types of the people from the inhabitants of the fire that I have not seen yet: men with whips like the tails of cattle, with which they strike the people, and women who are clothed yet naked, walking with an enticing gait, with something on their heads that looks like the humps of camels, leaning to one side. They will never enter Paradise or even smell its fragrance, although its fragrance can be detected from such and such a distance.”
(Narrated by Ahmad and by Muslim in al-Saheeh)
The question; explain to us this narration.
Shaykh Uthaymeen:
The Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ informed us that there will be two types of people which the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ did not see. The first type involves oppressing the people without just cause; using their whips to transgress upon them. They are a people who have with them whips like the tails of cattle which they use to beat the people; meaning they do so without just cause. The scholars (1) have said these are the police officers, the oppressive police officers, those who beat the people without just cause. Consequently they are from the inhabitants of the fire. This is because whoever aids an oppressor then he shall receive the portion of his sin which he deserves.

What Would Have Happened If Humankind Were Given Provision Beyond Their Needs?!
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy
Allaah [The Most High] said: [وَلَوْ بَسَطَ اللَّهُ الرِّزْقَ لِعِبَادِهِ لَبَغَوْا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَكِنْ يُنَزِّلُ بِقَدَرٍ مَا يَشَاءُ إِنَّهُ بِعِبَادِهِ خَبِيرٌ بَصِيرٌ – And if Allah were to enlarge the provision for His slaves, they would surely rebel in the earth, but He sends down by measure as He wills. Verily! He is in respect of His slaves, the Well-Aware, the All-Seer (of things that benefit them)]. [Soorah Ash-Shooraa: Ayah: 27] Meaning: They would have been heedless of obedience to Allaah and [completely] turn towards enjoyment in the worldly desires, and thus that would have necessitated engagement in that which their souls desire even if that was through disobedience and oppression. [وَلَكِنْ يُنَزِّلُ بِقَدَرٍ مَا يَشَاءُ – But He (Allaah) sends down by measure as He wills]- Meaning: By way of His [perfect] decree and due to His [perfect] kindness and Wisdom. [1]
Had He given them provision beyond their needs, it would have led some of them to more transgression and arrogance towards others, but He gives them provision of that which He chooses [and] in that which there is well-being for them, and He is well acquainted with that. [2]
