Bridging Worlds: The Importance of Balancing Islamic and Secular Knowledge As Muslims, we are encouraged to seek knowledge in all forms. Islām teaches us the importance of Islamic studies, but it also urges us to excel in secular fields like science, technology, and the arts. During the Golden Ages of Islām, Muslims produced scholars who were pioneers in mathematics, architecture, medicine, and technology. For example, the magnificent architecture of Alhambra in Islamic Spain demonstrates how Muslims once led the world in both faith and worldly knowledge. By mastering these fields, they contributed to society and advanced humanity while remaining devoted to their Islamic principles. Today, we must reclaim the spirit of Ihsān[excellence] and Ulū al-Himmah [High Aspiration] in both forms of knowledge. As we deepen our understanding of the Qur'ān and Sunnah, we must also gain the skills needed to lead in technology, business, media, and innovation. Both paths - Islamic and secular studies - are not in conflict but are complementary. Together, they allow us to serve Allāh and the Ummah in ways that improve the world. ‎وكان مالك بن دينار يقول Malik ibn Dinar used to say, ‎يا أهل القرآن ، “O people of the Qur’ān, ‎ماذا زرع القرآن في قلوبكم؟ What has the Qur’ān produced in your hearts? ‎فإن القرآن ربيع القلوب For the Qur’ān is the spring of the hearts, ‎كما أن الغيث ربيع الأرض just as rain is the spring for the earth.” ‎الجامع لأحكام القرآن [16/53]

Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA) said: “We were the most humiliated people on earth and Allāh gave us honor through Islam. If we ever seek honor through anything else, Allāh will humiliate us again.” [Mustadrak Hakim | Vol. 1, Pg. 62]

Remember Him When Alone with Your Thoughts The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, “The strong believer is more beloved to Allāh than the weak believer, but there is goodness in both of them." Muslim [no. 2664] This narration is often seen as referring only to physical strength, but it also has a deeper meaning related to the strength of faith [Imān] and the heart. A strong believer is: 1 - Firm in faith. 2 - Steadfast in tough times. 3 - Patient when tested. 4 - Trusting in Allāh in all circumstances. How does someone strengthen their faith? - One of the best ways is to worship Allāh when alone, which shows true sincerity [Ikhlās]. It reflects pure intention, showing that worship is for Allāh alone, without seeking recognition or praise from others. - Do not mention your good deeds to anyone. - Perform good deeds alone as you do when with others. Action Plan: - Focus on worshipping Allāh in private. Avoid wasting time on social media and concentrate on the Qur'ān and Dhikr. - Have secret deeds known only to Allāh. - Free yourself from traits of hypocrisy by doing good deeds and seeking forgiveness in private, not just when with others.. - Ask yourself the real question: How much do I really worship Allāh when alone? Ibn al-Jawzi رحمه الله said: ‎"The dowry of the hereafter is easy; ‎a sincere heart and a tongue that remembers (Allāh)." ‎[Bahr Al-Dumu’ | 84]

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said: “Their hearts were filled with good deeds and pure feelings for Allāh, and when the time of early dawn came, these deeds were performed and by dawn they reached Allāh.” [al-Fawā’id | Pg. 118]

Sa’īd ibn Jubayr رحمه الله said: “The first to be called to Al-Jannah are those who praise Allāh in every situation!" Or he said: "They are those who praise Allāh in both prosperity and adversity!" [Az-Zuhd Li Ibn Al-Mubarak: 206]

All of this only comes from the completeness of the purity of the heart." Jāmī’ al-Ulūm wal-Hikam [1/306] by Imām Ibn Rajab. - "He who is not pleased by what pleases the Believers and is not sad by what saddens the Believers is not one of them." Ibn al-Jawzi رحمه الله: ‎“There is a difference between someone who tells you with his tongue, “I love you”, and there is no evidence of his condition, and the one who is silent and does not say it, but you see evidence of all his conditions that speak of his love for you.” [طريق الهجرتين 314]

Backbiting [Ghībah] The Worst Type of Generosity Imām Ibn Taymīyyah said: "The worst type of generosity is being generous in gifting your good deeds to others due to backbiting, tale-carrying, lying, swearing and insulting [the believers]." See Majmoū Fatāwa [8/303] I will mention some harms of backbiting on a societal and individual level: Societal harms: ❖ It breaks the bond of brotherhood and creates disunity. ❖ Spreads envy, dislike, and hatred among the Muslims in the community. ❖ It spreads the practice of backbiting in the community. ❖ People’s privacies get exposed, spreads their faults and belittles them. ❖ The community start focusing on others instead of themselves. Individual harms: ❖ The one who backbites is bankrupt on the Day of Resurrection.  ❖ Increases bad deeds and decreases good ones. ❖ Leads to punishment in the grave. Knowing The Beautiful Names of Allāh The Prophet ﷺ said, “Allāh has ninety-nine names. Whoever learns them by heart [memorises/understands/calls upon Him with] them will enter Paradise.” Sahīh Bukhārī Spiritual development: - “Whoever knows the names of Allāh and their meanings, believing in them, will have a more complete faith than the one who does not know them but just believes in them in general.” See Majmoū Al-Fatāwa [7/234] by Ibn Taymīyyah. - “Whoever has knowledge about the names of Allāh and his attributes and actions will love him without a doubt." Is There Anyone That Wants a 1,000 Rewards & 1,000 Sins Erased The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, “Is one of you incapable of attaining a thousand good deeds? So a questioner among those seated with him asked him: “How can one of us earn a thousand good deeds?” He ﷺ said: “[When] one of you recites a hundred Tasbīḥāt a thousand good deeds are written for him, and a thousand evil deeds are wiped away from him.” Sunan Tirmidhī [no. 3463] and he graded it Hasan Sahīh. Say a hundred times: سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ Subhānallāh Glory be to Allāh Action Plan: - Read now while at home on the sofa, bed, work, walking or wherever you are. - ⁠Make time everyday for the remembrance of Allāh.
