WORD OF THE DAY: GERRYMANDERING Gerrymandering is the manipulation of electoral district boundaries to give a party an advantage. The term dates to 1812, when Massachusetts governor Elbridge Gerry approved a redistricting plan benefiting his party. One oddly shaped district resembled a salamander, inspiring “gerrymander” from Gerry + salamander 🦎 Two techniques are most commonly used: 1. Packing concentrates opposition voters in a few districts, reducing their influence elsewhere. 2. Cracking splits them across districts so they struggle to form a majority. Gerrymandering is especially associated with the US, where districts are redrawn as populations change. This can create a mismatch between votes and representation: a party may win around half the vote but secure more seats 🔎 Most argue that gerrymandering weakens competition by letting politicians manipulate the polls. It’s Worldwide Slinky Day! 🌈 Let’s delve into the history of the creation of the iconic spring toy 🧸 During World War II, an American naval mechanical engineer Richard James was working at a shipyard to develop special tension springs. These springs were meant to stabilize and protect sensitive instruments on military ships from rough seas and vibrations. One day, James accidentally knocked a prototype spring off a shelf. Instead of just falling, the spring «walked» gracefully from the shelf, onto a stack of books, down to a table, and finally onto the floor, where it neatly coiled itself back up. James realized that this unique kinetic motion would make a fascinating toy. James spent two years experimenting with different wire gauges, steel types, and tension levels to get the movement exactly right. His final formula required 80 feet of high-carbon steel wire wound into 98 coils. The spring had zero tension, allowing it to travel continuously under its own momentum and gravity. His wife, Betty James, found the name by searching the dictionary. She chose "Slinky" because it meant sleek, graceful, and sinuous. The couple took out a $500 loan to manufacture the first 400 units under their new company, James Industries. On November 27, 1945, they set up a ramp at the Gimbels department store in Philadelphia. All 400 Slinkys sold out in just 90 minutes!

Did you develop hundreds of uses for the peanut? I don’t think so. But George Washington Carver did! Along with revolutionizing Southern agriculture by promoting crop rotation, he discovered hundreds of uses for peanuts, sweet potatoes, and soybeans. How cool is that? With him as our starting point, I present a small list of some of the most prominent American inventors. Prepare to be amazed and slightly confused by the methods used to unearth great discoveries ⭐️ Samuel Morse (1791-1872): started his career as a portrait painter, but later in his life ended up contributing to the invention of a single-wire telegraph system. And yes, Morse code is named after him. George Eastman (1854-1932): founded the Eastman Kodak Company, helping to bring the photographic use of roll film into the mainstream with the slogan: “You press the button, we do the rest.” You can thank him for making photography more accessible. Ruth Wakefield (1903-1977): pioneered the first chocolate chip cookie recipe! Bette Nesmith Graham (1924-1980): was working as a secretary when she mixed up the first batch of Liquid Paper in her own kitchen blender. It was originally called “Mistake Out" That ended up being a multimillion-dollar invention that you have probably used to cover up an extra letter in a misspelled word. No worries, we’ve all been there.
