 WORD OF THE DAY: GERRYMANDERING
Gerrymandering is the manipulation of electoral district boundaries to give a party an advantage.
The term dates to 1812, when Massachusetts governor Elbridge Gerry approved a redistricting plan benefiting his party. One oddly shaped district resembled a salamander, inspiring “gerrymander” from Gerry + salamander 🦎
Two techniques are most commonly used:
1. Packing concentrates opposition voters in a few districts, reducing their influence elsewhere.
2. Cracking splits them across districts so they struggle to form a majority.
Gerrymandering is especially associated with the US, where districts are redrawn as populations change.
This can create a mismatch between votes and representation: a party may win around half the vote but secure more seats 🔎
Most argue that gerrymandering weakens competition by letting politicians manipulate the polls.
Two centuries later, the salamander is gone, but Gerry’s legacy remains alive 🔋
