π€ Ex-DeepMind researcher quits over AI extinction fears
Bilal Chughtai, a former Google DeepMind research engineer who worked on AGI safety and alignment, has resigned citing fears that AI "has the potential to kill us all." He warned that "frontier AI capabilities are improving much faster than our understanding of AI alignment" and that humanity "might be running out of time."
Chughtai joins BlueDot Impact, a London-based AI safety nonprofit that recently raised $25 million. His departure follows a viral post by former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon making similar warnings, with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman both agreeing that frontier labs need to pace development while advancing alignment work.
