🛜📌Damage on Earth from an Islamic Perspective 🌎
☝️Allah ﷻ explains that much of the damage occurring on Earth is a result of human actions. His word:
"Corruption has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of men have earned, that Allah may make them taste some of what they have done, so that they may return."
(QS. Ar-Rum: 41)
This verse explains the law of cause and effect (sunnatullah). Allah uses the phrase "bimā kasabat aidin-nās" (because of what the hands of men have earned), which indicates that various forms of human deviation can lead to damage and negative impacts that ultimately return to humans themselves.
Exegesis scholars explain that the word fasād (corruption) has a broad meaning, encompassing damage in religion, morals, social life, economy, security, and the environment. Immorality, injustice, greed, and violations of Allah's rules become the cause of the loss of blessings and the emergence of various forms of damage on Earth.
Meanwhile, Allah also says:
"And do not cause corruption on the earth after it has been set in order."
(QS. Al-A'raf: 56)
✍️This verse is a preventive prohibition. Allah has created the Earth in a good, orderly, and balanced state. Humans are commanded to maintain this order, not to destroy it through injustice, excessive exploitation, or various actions that eliminate benefits for living beings.
📌Exploitation and Technology from an Islamic Perspective
In the modern context, forms of damage due to human actions are no longer limited to environmental pollution, deforestation, illegal mining of mountains, or exploitation of natural resources. The development of science and technology can also be a means of good or a means of destruction, depending on its purpose and method of use.
Islam does not forbid technology. On the contrary, technology is a blessing and a trust from Allah that can be used for the benefit of humanity. However, if technology is used to oppress humans, damage the environment, destroy the balance of nature, spread corruption, or support immorality, then its use becomes a reprehensible and sinful act according to the level of harm it causes.
Thus, Islam judges that it is not the technology itself that is reprehensible, but its misuse. All forms of utilization of science and technology that contradict Sharia, cause injustice, and lead to damage on Earth are included in Allah's prohibition not to cause corruption after He has set it in order.
Therefore, maintaining the balance of nature, using technology responsibly, avoiding excess, and preserving the trust as caliphs on Earth are part of obedience to Allah. This is the meaning contained in His word that damage on land and sea appears "because of what the hands of men have earned," as a warning for humans to return to Allah's guidance, repent, and improve the situation.
Preserving nature is not merely a social or environmental issue, but a manifestation of obedience to Allah SWT. Islam views nature as an ayat (sign) of God's power that must be kept sacred. When humans improve their morals, avoid immorality, and act justly towards fellow beings and nature, they are essentially fulfilling their sacred duty as Khalifah fil Ardh (Allah's representative on Earth) in carrying out the task of upholding His rules, prospering life, and preserving nature from damage.
🔴And remember when your Lord said to the angels, 'Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority.'
(QS. Al-Baqarah: 30)
⚠️Know that justice is the key to the preservation of nature, while injustice is the main trigger of disaster.
