A massive plume of dust from the Sahara the worlds largest hot desert is set to cover portions of the United States.
Each summer powerful winds lift millions of tons of fine particles from the Sahara Desert in North Africa high into the atmosphere. This dry dusty air mass known as the Saharan Air Layer can journey thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean.
This week one of the most substantial plumes is forecast to cross over Florida before extending into Texas and additional Gulf Coast regions.
For the general public the primary effects will include hazy skies diminished visibility and unusually vivid sunrises and sunsets. Since much of the dust remains aloft at higher altitudes only minimal amounts are likely to settle on the ground.
Nevertheless the plume may briefly degrade air quality posing challenges for individuals with asthma allergies or respiratory issues.
The dust also influences Atlantic hurricane activity. Saharan air carries far less moisture than standard tropical conditions and is paired with strong winds that heighten vertical wind shear. These factors together hinder the development and strengthening of tropical storms.
Forecasters note that this extensive dry dusty layer is a key reason why tropical system formation in the Atlantic and Caribbean is projected to stay subdued at least through mid July.
