Behind the house lay a garden that, from childhood, became a wellspring of inspiration for the artist. Throughout his brief life, he would return to this garden to paint plein-air studies for his larger compositions. With meticulous precision, the artist renders on canvas everything his eye observes—the lush greenery of plants blooming with white, red, and pink flowers, the slightly ajar bluish shutters, the wide-open white window frames, and the parted lace curtains framing the window's opening. In front of them, alongside a young man, stands the artist’s cousin, Jeanna Marguerite. The vast stretch of sea is dotted with sailing vessels of all sizes. Together with the sky—divided into cloudy and clear halves—nearly half the scene is taken up by the terrace itself, alive with bright gladioli and nasturtiums.
