French artist: Rosa Bonheur (1822–1899)
Canvas, oil; 46×56 cm
National Museum in Stockholm
The cat is captured in a moment of alert stillness—its gaze fixed upward, body poised in a subtle balance between calm and the potential for instant motion.
Through masterful play of light and shadow, and an incredibly delicate rendering of fur texture, Bonheur reveals the animal’s strength, independence, and instinctive wariness.

Artist: Mikhail Anatolyevich Mamontov
Canvas, oil; 57×51 cm
State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow
Mikhail Mamontov was the son of Anatoly Mamontov, a printing house owner, and nephew of Savva Mamontov—the renowned patron and founder of the Abramtsevo artistic circle. From childhood, the young artist was immersed in the vibrant creative environment of these artistic hubs. For many years, he studied painting privately under Alexander Alexandrovich Kiselyov. Later, his artistic growth drew attention from greats of realist art, including Ilya Repin and Vasily Polenov.
Road Through a Ravine was painted shortly after Mamontov’s journey to Italy with his friends Valentin Serov and Ilya Ostroukhov. Inspired and invigorated by the masterpieces of Western European art they encountered, the young artist created one of his finest landscapes to date.

After his wife's death, the artist cared for his two daughters—eldest Sasha and younger Felitsata—with deep tenderness and affection, rejoicing in their growth and grieving over their illnesses:
My little ones console me with their progress and innocent hearts.
Alexandra showed artistic talent early on and began drawing and painting under her father’s guidance. Later, she wrote detailed memoirs about him, lovingly portraying a gifted yet humble, noble and wise man—someone cherished and respected by all who knew him.

Artist: Viktor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov
Canvas, oil; 62.5×47 cm
State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow
Borisov-Musatov depicts a window of a single-story annex in Saratov, where his family lived on a modest square grandly named Platz-Parade. Behind the house lay a garden that, from childhood, became a wellspring of inspiration for the artist. Throughout his brief life, he would return to this garden to paint plein-air studies for his larger compositions.
With meticulous precision, the artist renders on canvas everything his eye observes—the lush greenery of plants blooming with white, red, and pink flowers, the slightly ajar bluish shutters, the wide-open white window frames, and the parted lace curtains framing the window's opening.
