Bitcoin surged past $80,000 on Tuesday, rising over 2% to $80,501.
The move extends last week’s sharp rally, when BTC gained more than 20% in three days — its strongest three-day performance since 2023. A short squeeze played a role, liquidating over $4 billion in bearish positions.
Key factors behind the rise:
➖Strong inflows into U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs ($1.92 billion last week — the largest weekly total since October)
➖Improved risk appetite
➖U.S. Treasury’s plan to increase purchases of longer-dated bonds
➖Growing concerns over inflation and government debt
Fundstrat suggested the rally could prove “more durable than a tactical bounce,” pointing to ETF inflows, higher trading activity, and increased stablecoin creation. Options market activity also shows investors taking longer-term positions.
Notably, the rally occurred without fresh buying from Strategy, the largest corporate bitcoin holder, which has not purchased BTC for two weeks.
Questions remain about how long the breakout can hold. Bitcoin has been in a prolonged downturn since October, and similar past surges have sometimes faded.
