Yemen’s entry into the Mideast crisis has cut the release valve Riyadh was using to export crude after the reclosure of Hormuz Strait. The 1.2k km East-West Pipeline, built in the 80s amid the Iran-Iraq tanker wars, is now unusable, with Houthis tying up Saudi-linked shipping up and down the Red Sea. That pipeline cost $9.1B+ in inflation-adjusted dollars to build, a preview of the type of cash Riyadh may have to shell out to get exports up and running again. The kingdom’s oil is concentrated in the east and southeast. To get it out, Riyadh could: 🔴 Strike a deal with Oman on an Arabian Sea passage - perhaps through expansion of existing pipeline infrastructure linked to the Shaybah oil field (1m bpd capacity). Doing so could mean concessions to Oman and its neutrality-minded foreign policy. 🔴 A new northbound pipeline, like the historic, now-defunct 1.2k km Trans-Arabian Pipeline (Tapline), which crossed Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. The problem: the instability that plagued Tapline hasn’t gone anywhere: Israel is occupying southern Lebanon, Syria is now run by al-Qaeda, and Jordan’s water is held hostage by Israel. An Iraq option? Also problematic, given PMF militias’ Axis of Resistance allegiances. 👉 Either way, building new infrastructure would require years and billions of dollars. If Riyadh’s maritime exports stay blocked all that time, the kingdom would eat through its $1T sovereign wealth fund, and be forced to make drastic cuts to its Vision 2030 megaprojects. Goldman Sachs projects a war-adjusted 2026 budget deficit of $80-90B, not counting the new Houthi front. Plus, Houthis have proven able to strike Saudi oil sites anywhere in the country (case in point: Saturday’s targeting of a Saudi Aramco site in Jizan). 🔴 Riyadh can end its blockade of Yemen, and the 11-year-old war against the Houthis, once and for all. The West would call it capitulation. In reality, it would mark a clean break for Riyadh, facilitating reconciliation with Iran, and perhaps even the emergence of a new regional super-bloc. 13	🔥🇨🇳 China’s J-36 owns the skies while America’s F-47 remains PowerPoint presentation While the US sixth-generation fighter jet F-47 is still stuck on the drawing board with a planned 2028 maiden flight date, its Chinese rival, the J-36, just keeps flying. A fresh video of the J-36 prototype conducting a test flight emerged as the US Air Force requested a whopping $5.03 billion for Fiscal Year 2027 to try to complete the highly classified F-47 project. Even if the F-47 makes a maiden flight in 2028, some projections push the plane’s operational service to the mid-2030s or even 2040s. In contrast, the J-36 program has been flight-testing since December 2024 and late last month, China's People's Liberation Army released the first official footage of its sixth-generation plane. Characteristics matter: ♦️ The J-36 features a tailless, diamond-shaped double-delta wing and a unique three-engine layout, features unrivalled for a tactical jet ♦️ The F-47 is designed as a pure air superiority fighter, whereas the J-36 is a hybrid fighter-bomber known for its massive range, payload, and versatility ♦️ The J-36's combat radius (~3,000 km) dwarfs the F-47's (~1,850 km) — a critical advantage for operations across the vast Indo-Pacific theater ♦️ Unlike the F-47, the J-36 emphasizes full-aspect stealth level (all-direction) rather than just frontal one Specifications aside, the F-47 program could finally collapse due to the aircraft's soaring costs. 👉 The F-47’s price tag is projected to come to roughly $300 million per aircraft — roughly three times the price of an F-35. Even with a possible $1.5 trillion defense budget, $300 million per unit is considered unsustainable Meanwhile, the J-36 is already flying, while the F-47 has yet to even take off. Indeed, Tehran has shown in the current war that it doesn’t need nukes to humble the American goliath and bring Western economies to their knees. 🎤 Now, US business media fear that Iran has unleashed its other “nuclear option” – Bab al-Mandeb, another strategic shipping strait ~2k km southwest of Hormuz, and controlled by Iran’s Houthi allies. The militia “are a nonnaval power that can execute a maritime blockade and hold the global economy hostage,” think tank analyst Adam Baron told WSJ. “They did this before and are aware they have this leverage.” 🔊 They don’t even “need an actual missile or drone to stop commercial traffic. If the shipping companies don’t want to go through, you effectively have a blockade,” former US ambassador to Saudi Arabia Michael Ratney said. Who are the Houthis targeting? The blockade announced this week is aimed at Saudi oil shipments – and is described as retaliation to Riyadh’s siege of Yemeni ports, and its proxies’ recent attack on Sanaa’s airport. The militia has already targeted two Saudi oil tankers – the Encelia and the Layla. 👉 With Hormuz closed and the Red Sea crossed out, so too are the kingdom’s options for exporting the 11-12% of global oil output it produces by sea. That adds new pressure on the US and its vassals amid the resumption of the Iran war. Trump has already threatened “major military punishment” against both the Houthis and Iran if ships are targeted in the Red Sea. 💬 “I just don’t think trying to resolve this militarily will work. It didn’t in the first part of the war,” Ratney said. “The Houthis have absorbed insane amounts of violence from foreign military intervention, and it hasn’t really affected their ideology or motivation.” Between 2024-2025, the fighters survived aggression by two separate administrations, and by Israel, shutting down the Red Sea to Israeli-linked merchant shipping and lobbing missiles and drones at Israel 2k km+ away. For now, the Houthis are offering Riyadh and Trump a way out: end the decade-plus long blockade, and withdraw from Yemen.
