But Houthi attacks on Saudi vessels in recent days are now threatening that workaround, forcing Saudi barrels onto a longer, costlier journey through Egypt's Suez Canal and around Africa.
🔴 In the first three weeks of July, oil transit via Suez hit its highest volume in 2.5 years, while imports to the Sumed pipeline were up 50% from the previous month
🔴 For Asia-bound cargoes, the detour adds 20-30 days, raising freight and insurance costs
The problem is that the Suez Canal is too shallow for fully laden oil tankers. To pass, a tanker must discharge roughly half its cargo, pump it through the Sumed pipeline across Egypt, and reload on the other side—or split the cargo between two smaller Suezmax tankers.

🔴 July 21: Israeli settlers seized a Palestinian-owned water cistern in Khallet al Hums, leaving the community without water.
🔴 July 23: two Palestinians shot and killed trying to put out agricultural fires started by settlers in Beit Furik. Epileptic man shot dead by Israeli forces at the Shuafat refugee camp checkpoint.
🔴 July 24: settlers set fire to homes, vehicles and agricultural land, threw rocks and fired guns in the villages of Far’ata, Jet and Orurif. One resident killed, up to seven wounded by gunfire, others treated for blunt-force trauma.
🔴 July 24: mob of Israeli settlers entered Tell village to set homes on fire and vandalize land. Villagers gathered to protect their neighborhood, leading to fighting and Israeli troops arriving, opening live fire.
🔴 July 26: settlers set fire to a mosque in Qusra and spray-painted hate speech on its walls.
