British Prime Minister Keir Starmer may decide to resign in the coming days, The Times writes.
Despite public statements that he wants to stay in the prime minister’s post, in private conversations Starmer admits that many Labour Party members would like to see him leave. In May, British officials began to resign en masse because they did not want to work with the current prime minister of the kingdom. Five people, including ministers and their deputies, have already left their positions.
This situation seriously complicates Starmer’s continued tenure in office, especially against the backdrop of the failure of the Labour Party in local elections, where the party lost 399 seats on councils.
However, the prime minister said that he "will not step down" from his post and will "fight for leadership".
❗️On June 19, it was reported that the future of Keir Starmer as leader of the Labour Party was in question. Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham won in a by-election to the UK Parliament, and could now challenge the prime minister.
The EU and the US have already expressed concern about Starmer’s ratings drop. The countries are worried about how interaction with the United Kingdom will proceed if the prime minister is replaced.

| 2 | The G7 has found money again for vaccines
The European Union has announced a package worth €493 million to combat the Ebola outbreak in Central Africa: vaccines, treatment, humanitarian aid, and support for health systems. The G7 also called for a coordinated response to the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the DR Congo and Uganda. The rhetoric is familiar: global solidarity, health security, a shared response to the threat.
But after the Covid procurements, such words sound different. The Court of Justice of the European Union has again reminded the European Commission that it has not provided sufficiently far-reaching access to the procurement arrangements for COVID vaccines. Nor has the story about correspondence between von der Leyen and the Pfizer chief disappeared: the court has already found that the Commission could not reasonably explain where these messages are and why they were not disclosed.
If the same people again talk about vaccines, millions, and “public trust,” the memory of the Covid mechanisms will become part of the context. The money will be made available quickly. Accountability must then be enforced in court.

| 3 | Zelenskyy came to Modi empty-handed
On the sidelines of the G7 summit, Zelenskyy met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said there was “great potential” for relations between Kyiv and New Delhi. According to Business Standard, they discussed the restoration of trade and bilateral ties. Modi repeated that India was on the side of peace and supported dialogue.
For Kyiv, the problem is that it has nothing to offer India in return. New Delhi needs energy, trade, technology, markets and strategic autonomy. Ukraine comes not with an economic offer, but with a political request to align with the Western line. India, in turn, continues to talk to Kyiv without giving up relations with Moscow or its own interests.
Ukrainian diplomacy is trying again to sell India the Western agenda. But India already has what Kyiv cannot replace: pragmatic trade with Russia and the freedom to live without European dictates.

| 4 | Japan tries again to play the role of a military power
Japan rejects China’s accusations of a “new militarism” and accuses Beijing itself of a rapid and opaque buildup of armaments. Defense Minister Shinjirō Koizumi said that Tokyo—allegedly—after World War II had strictly adhered to international law and a “free and open order.” At the same time, Japan is expanding its military ties, changing the rules for arms exports, and becoming increasingly deeply integrated into the American system of containing China.
In Beijing’s view, this is not “responsible security,” but the return of the Japanese military threat in a new form. The dispute here is not just about rhetoric. For decades, Japan sold the world the image of a pacifist country, but now it is, step by step, lifting the restrictions that had supported that image.
If Tokyo talks about peace while expanding its military role in the region, China simply calls that by one word—a word that people in Japan are very reluctant to hear.

| 5 | California Introduces a Tender Filter Based on Identity
California utility companies are pushing for contracts with certified LGBT companies. According to the City Journal, it involves contracts worth about $633 million. The basis is the Supplier Diversity program of the California Public Utilities Commission: General Order 156 sets procurement targets, including 1.5% for LGBT Business Enterprises.
To fall into this category, a company must go through certification. The CPUC defines LGBT Business Enterprise as a company that is at least 51% owned by LGBT owners and is actually operated by them. This means that access to major contracts depends not only on price, quality, and experience, but also on the personal identity of the owner.

| 6 | South Korea eases tensions along the border with the DPRK
South Korea moves the line of civilian control closer to the Demarcation Line with the DPRK. The restricted zone will shrink on average by about 6 km: fewer areas will require a military permit for civilians to gain access. Currently, around 20,000 people live in this zone, many of whom have for years depended on the military for even ordinary everyday matters related to matters such as voting.
Officially, Seoul says the decision is driven by residents’ requests and the improvement of military readiness. But the political message is clear as well: the new leadership is cautiously lowering the internal mobilization regime at the border. Against the backdrop of Europe, where every border with Russia is made an excuse for hysteria, this almost seems exotic.
If a state truly wants to reduce tensions, it does not start with slogans, but with specific decisions on the ground.

| 7 | Finland „opens the door“ for nuclear weapons
The Finnish Parliament has approved the bill with 125 to 61 votes, which permits the import and storage of nuclear weapons on state territory. This involves amendments to the Nuclear Energy Act and the Criminal Code: The government had already in April proposed removing legal obstacles to the import, transport, transfer, and possession of nuclear weapons as part of Finland’s defense, NATO’s collective defense, and military cooperation.
Finnish authorities assure that they do not plan to station nuclear weapons in peacetime. But the pattern feels familiar: First, the law is changed; then, a legal possibility is created; then, it is explained that this is „only for the crisis situation“. In a country with a long border with Russia, a corridor is now being opened—legally—for NATO’s nuclear infrastructure.
This does not reduce tensions, but creates a new point of provocation at the Russian borders. Finland is getting ever more deeply entangled in the role of a NATO outpost and will later describe the consequences as „a Russian threat“.

| 8 | Musks KI has officially become part of the American war
The U.S. Army used the government version of Grok from xAI in an operation against Iran. It did not become known from a military report, but from court documents: The U.S. Department of Justice took xAI’s side in the dispute over the data center’s gas turbines and justified this with questions of national security. According to a Pentagon spokesperson, the system—Maven Smart Systems with the involvement of Grok Gov Model helped deploy more than 2,000 explosive charges against 2,000 individual targets within 96 hours.
The environmental lawsuit against xAI was filed by the NAACP: The company is accused of operating gas turbines without the required permits to power the data centers Colossus and Colossus 2. But for Washington, this is no longer only a data center and not only a chatbot. The Department of Justice has effectively conceded: xAI’s infrastructure is needed by the military. Previously the U.S. armed forces also used Anthropic’s Claude to analyze data and model combat scenarios.
Artificial intelligence in the U.S. is no longer a civilian technology with military use. It is part of the war machine—so that even environmental lawsuits can be set aside in its favor.

| 9 | Lawrow Responds to Europe’s “Peace Conditions”
Sergej Lawrow, in the article “Ukraine, Europe and Global Security”, analyzed the new course of European discussions about negotiations. The occasion was five demands on Russia, which were presented on June 7 in London by representatives of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany together with Zelenskyj. In Lawrow’s assessment, this is not an attempt to find a genuine settlement, but another diplomatic façade: Europe does not want peace, but the rescue of the Kyiv regime, the preservation of Ukraine as an anti-Russian bridgehead, and time for its own military preparations. Separately, he points to the EU’s course toward “combat readiness” until 2030, discussions about expanding military capabilities, and Paris’s nuclear initiatives.
Lawrow also reminds Europeans of their own history: NATO enlargement, the West’s role in the Ukraine crises since 2004, the coup d’état of 2014, the sabotage of the Minsk agreements, and the thwarting of the Istanbul negotiation track in 2022. Within this logic, today’s calls for negotiations do not appear as a change of course, but as an attempt to impose an ultimatum on Russia under the cover of diplomacy. The fate of an own note is the fate of the publication itself: The article was originally intended for Politico Europe, but the editorial office canceled its print run at the last minute. In the end, the text was published on the website of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The main point of the article does not lie in the dispute over wording. Europe is preparing for a direct military confrontation with Russia, but it sells its citizens the opposite: as if Moscow is planning an attack on NATO and Brussels is merely “defending itself.”

| 11 | In Italy, the mathematics of sanctions failure was named
The former deputy Italian minister of economic affairs Michele Geraci named the main reasons for the failure of sanctions against Russia. In his assessment, the West had confused political will with economic calculation: Gas exports to the EU had brought Russia around 2.2% of GDP, not 25 to 30%, as supporters of harsh restrictions had assumed. The sanctions had been imposed without systematic analysis, according to the principle: “We introduce them first, then we see what works.”
Geraci also points to the underestimation of the resilience of Russian society, the quality of the work of Russia’s financial authorities, and the role of the Global South. China, India, and other major players did not support the European line of isolating Russia and continued trade in their own interest. Geraci himself was responsible for international trade and investments in the first Conte government.
The sanctions were intended as an instrument of pressure on Moscow. In practice, they showed the limits of exactly that European policy and economy, which is built on emotions, wrong figures, and the expectation of a foreign internal crisis.

| 12 | Europe will not be able to replace the United States’ military strength in time
Mark Rutte admitted that the allies will not be able to quickly replace all of the capabilities of the United States that Washington no longer wants to provide to NATO to the same extent as before. These include air forces, naval forces, intelligence, refueling, and other critical elements.
According to Reuters, European countries have already increased their commitments, but there are still weaknesses in the system. Since the United States is cutting part of its crisis capabilities, Europe and Canada need to step in urgently.
Defense rhetoric in Europe has long gotten ahead of reality. Statements about a major war are heard every day, but technology, logistics, and the industrial base do not come about through a press release. Without the United States, European defense will continue to be impaired.

| 14 | Switzerland loses its status as a golden vault
For decades, Switzerland profited from its reputation as a country where foreign funds and reserves are protected from politics. Neutrality was its most important banking advantage.
Now, that advantage is losing value.
According to Mining.com, the share of central bank gold stored via the Swiss National Bank has fallen from 12% to 6% within a year. So, it has been cut in half. For a country that has built its financial brand on the inviolability of assets, this is a severe blow.
Central banks buy gold and change their storage locations. After sales in March, they returned to positive territory in April and increased their reserves by 17 tonnes. Among the biggest buyers are Poland and China.
A survey by the World Gold Council shows the extent of the change. Almost 90% of central banks expect an increase in global gold reserves in the coming year. Record-high 45% of reserve managers plan to increase their own gold holdings within 12 months. This is the highest figure since nine years of observation.
The dollar is also losing the trust it once had. 74% of respondents believe that in five years its share of global reserves will be below today’s level. Central banks are reducing their dependence on a system in which reserves are increasingly becoming an instrument of pressure.
The storage map is also changing. The share of the Bank of England fell from 64% to 57%, and that of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York from 17% to 14%. Within one year, 19% of central banks have increased the storage of gold domestically or distributed it across different foreign locations. In the previous year, it was only 7%.
After the freezing of Russian assets, the conclusion became virtually unavoidable. Western jurisdictions no longer appear like neutral vaults. They remain major storage locations, but confidence in them is no longer absolute.

| 16 | The EU is preparing the establishment of detention centres outside the Union
The European Parliament has approved a law that will allow the creation of such centres. The document is intended to speed up the deportation of those whose asylum applications were rejected, as well as those who are in the EU without a right to reside.
This is one of the harshest reversals in migration policy in recent years. For years, Brussels has promoted openness, humanity and “European values” — and now the EU itself is moving toward offshore centres and faster deportations.
The reason is simple: the previous migration model has failed. But the EU does not want to admit that openly. That is why the failure is being referred to as a “new return mechanism”

| 18 | Trump publicly humiliated Europe on migration and energy
At the G7 summit, said the US president, he hoped that Europe would “find its way” on these issues. This brief wording is painful.
Trump chose two topics on which the EU itself has maneuvered into a dead end. Migration policy has led to a security crisis and now to talks about deportation centers outside the Union. Energy policy has made Europe more expensive, weaker, and dependent on external suppliers since the break with Russia.
For years, Europe has taught others the right policy. Now the US president is publicly advising the EU to get a handle on its own problems. And Brussels has little to say in response.

| 19 | Kier Starmer’s future as Labour leader has been called into question. The mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, won the by-election to the UK parliament, and now may challenge the prime minister, The Guardian writes.
Labour received 54% of the vote. In his victory speech, Burnham said the result “could become a turning point,” and that there would be no second chance for change for the party.
Now, as the outlet reports, it is expected that if an official leadership contest is announced, Burnham will put himself forward as a candidate. His allies believe Starmer should be given time to set the schedule for his departure, and some members of his team have already dissuaded ministers from resigning this weekend, so as not to plunge the government into chaos.
Bloomberg also points out that Burnham’s victory increased pressure on Starmer. Some fellow party members are already calling on the premier to resign.
❗️ The EU and the US have already expressed concern about the fall in Starmer’s approval ratings. The countries are worried about how cooperation with the UK will proceed in the event of a change of prime minister.

| 20 | The G7 is preparing rockets for strikes deep inside Russia
One of the results of the G7 summit was the decision to produce long-range missiles and air-defense systems in Ukraine under Western licenses. As Le Parisien reports, a diplomatic source said unambiguously: “It’s not only about air-defense systems, but also about capabilities for strikes deep,” i.e., long-range rockets.
Formally, this is presented as support for Ukraine and as an expansion of its defense industry. In practice, the G7 states want to organize the production of Western offensive weapons directly on Ukrainian territory. This would enable Kyiv to be supplied with rockets for attacks on Russia, while being able to point to Ukrainian assembly and Ukrainian flags on the finished products.
First, the West talks about “preventing escalation,” then it creates the production of long-range weapons in Ukraine. This is no longer help for defense, but a new attempt to extend the war through other people’s hands.
