| 9 | VZ and others having their "Blockbuster" moment
The parallels to blockbuster and the telcos are incredible. This study lays our clearly why blockbuster failed, but more importantly, how they failed to evolve.https://ir.law.utk.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1010&context=utk\_studlawbankruptcyVZ and other telecom companies are just cutting headcount to say AI will save them, where they really are so terribly run and ignorant to real threats that the executives just simply want to slow roll into oblivion. In 10 years, SpaceX will have eaten them alive and give a superior service.

| 19 | Asimov imagined the robot economy 70 years ago. Here's the AI trade everyone might be missing.
I've been rereading Isaac Asimov's Robot series and Iain M. Banks's Culture novels, and I think they offer an interesting way to understand where the AI investment boom might be heading.Bear with me. There's an actual investment thesis here.Elon Musk recently recommended Banks's Culture novels as one of the best depictions of a future with superintelligent AI. Demis Hassabis of Google DeepMind is also a huge fan. These are people spending billions trying to build technologies resembling what science-fiction writers imagined decades ago.Asimov's Robot novels describe societies where robots perform most human labor. In The Naked Sun, the inhabitants of Solaria enjoy extraordinary material wealth, surrounded by robots that take care of practically everything. Human interaction has become increasingly unnecessary, and the society is isolated and stagnant.Banks goes further. In the Culture, superintelligent machines run most of the economy, material scarcity has largely disappeared, and people are free to do whatever they want. There's hardly any need for money or employment. Now suppose something remotely resembling this actually happens over the next 10–20 years. The interesting investment opportunity might be in the transition, rather than the destination.Today, human intelligence and labor are relatively scarce and expensive. Companies spend enormous amounts of money hiring engineers, scientists, accountants, programmers and other specialists. What happens if AI makes intelligence 100 times cheaper? And what happens when robotics eventually does something similar to physical labor? The obvious conclusion is that productivity explodes. But there's a less obvious consequence: making intelligence abundant doesn't automatically make everything else abundant. You still need electricity, semiconductors, factories, cooling systems, transmission lines, copper and enormous amounts of capital. In fact, demand for these physical resources could increase dramatically. The IEA's 2026 outlook projects global data-center electricity consumption roughly doubling from 485 TWh in 2025 to 950 TWh in 2030. And that only covers the infrastructure side of the AI economy, before any hypothetical mass deployment of general-purpose robots. So here's how I'd think about the trade.$NVDA and $MU: The familiar compute trade. GPUs and memory are central to scaling AI, although competition, efficiency improvements and semiconductor cycles could affect the economics.$VRT and $ETN: The physical infrastructure trade. Data centers need cooling, power distribution, electrical equipment and increasingly sophisticated systems to handle dense AI workloads. Software can improve remarkably quickly, but manufacturing and installing electrical infrastructure takes real time.$GEV: The electricity-generation and grid-equipment angle. If demand for power grows faster than infrastructure can expand, companies supplying generation and grid technology could benefit.$TSLA: A more speculative bet on the next phase. If general-purpose humanoid robots become commercially viable, the addressable market could extend well beyond automotive manufacturing. But the gap between an impressive demonstration and profitable mass deployment remains enormous.Of course, there's a giant problem with all these ideas: the market isn't stupid, and much of this future may already be priced in.If AI capabilities disappoint, hyperscalers reduce capital expenditure, or inference becomes dramatically more efficient without a corresponding explosion in usage, infrastructure suppliers could suffer badly. Even if the technological thesis is correct, paying too much for the stocks can destroy returns. There's another possibility I find particularly interesting. We might be heading toward a society of extraordinary technological abundance while ownership of the machines, infrastructure and productive assets becomes increasingly concentrated. A future where labor becomes… | 79 |
