UN Votes to Adopt New World Map Representing Africa’s True Scale
The United Nations General Assembly has officially voted to shift away from traditional Mercator map projections in favor of equal-area mapping that reflects true geographic scale.
In a landmark resolution sponsored by Togo, 164 nations voted in favor of the measure, with the United States casting the sole opposing vote. Traditional maps have long stretched polar landmasses while shrinking regions near the equator, masking the reality that Africa’s 30.3 million square kilometers can fit the US, China, India, and most of Europe combined. By adopting equal-area projections, the UN aims to correct these historical visual distortions and present an accurate spatial representation of the Global South across international governance and education.

December 8, 1972. A routine Ethiopian Airlines flight to Paris turns into one of the most defining hijackings in the country's history. Seven students, barely older than the ones they used to sit beside in lecture halls, rise from their seats with pistols in hand and a revolution on their minds. They believed they were lighting a torch for equality. But at 29,000 feet, everything they had spent months planning began to unravel.
Gunfire breakouts and grenades going off on air. Led the plane and the dreams these students carry with them into a spiral.
But who were these students, and what drove them to risk it all? What really happened in the sky that day, and is there more to this story than history ever let us know? Today we will explore this to answer What really happened on flight 708.

Behind Ethiopia's rising hip hop scene is a record label betting everything on its artists. Born out of the chaos of COVID lockdowns, Meedo Records went from a shelved idea to the launchpad for some of the country's biggest stars.
But success came with its own price, including a very public legal battle over an artist's masters that tested the label from the inside out. In an industry with no clear rulebook, rampant piracy, and almost no structure to fall back on, what does it actually take to run a label, and protect the art without losing the business?

Do you think Grade 12 exam results put too much pressure on students?
7 501
A Grade 12 result can open a door, or make a young person feel like every door has closed. Behind the numbers are students facing disappointment, family expectations, and difficult questions about what comes next. But is one exam really enough to define a young person’s future?

Sydro Relaunches With Focus on Ethiopia’s Creator Economy
Ethiopian software company Infra Tech Software Service officially launched Sydro, its video-first social media platform, on Sunday, August 30, at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa. The event brought together company executives, content creators and technology leaders. Infra Tech says Sydro has more than 500,000 registered users.
The launch follows an earlier rollout in February 2026, when users reported sign-up and technical problems. Subsequent updates added features including messaging, gifting and live streaming. Sydro is now focusing on creator monetization, with telebirr and Chapa integration allowing users to tip and send virtual gifts, including support from Ethiopians abroad. The company now hopes to turn its growing user base into an active creator economy.

Making it in the Ethiopian music industry is one of the hardest things an artist or a label can attempt. There's no clear playbook, little structure to lean on, and even less room for error. Every win comes with a cost, and every misstep gets magnified in an industry still figuring out its own rules.
Now imagine being the label trying to build something lasting inside all of that chaos. That's the position one of the country's most talked about labels Meedo records finds itself in today. After years of helping shape a scene almost from scratch, it's now going through its own reckoning, learning hard lessons, and choosing to reinvent itself rather than stay the same.
This is a story about what it really takes to run a record lable in Ethiopia the good the bad and the ugly.
