Do you want to understand why no man can see God and live, and why God had to make Himself known to us in a way we could relate to Him? Imagine going outside on a sunny day and staring directly at the sun with your naked eyes for one minute. You probably wouldn’t even last that long! 😭 The sun is so powerful that looking directly at it can damage your eyes. And that’s just the sun, a created object, millions of miles away from us! Now imagine standing in the presence of the One who created it. If a created thing can be this powerful, how much more the Creator Himself? The Bible tells us that God dwells in unapproachable light (1 Timothy 6:16). This is why God revealed Himself to us in a way we could understand and relate to. He came to us in the person of Jesus Christ! Jesus is God made known to humanity. The invisible God revealed Himself through the Son so that we could know Him, see His character, hear His words, and understand His love. As Jesus said in John 14:9, “He that hath seen me hath seen the Father.” God didn’t remain distant and unknowable. He came to us! That is the beauty of the incarnation. That is the beauty of Jesus! In 1855, in the hills of Madison County, Kentucky, a preacher named John G. Fee helped start a little school with a big idea. It became Berea College. Berea opened its doors to students no matter their color or whether they were men or women, which was nearly unheard of in the South at that time. And over the years it became known for something mountain families understood well: hard work. Students paid their way by working, and since 1892 the college has not charged tuition at all. Part ll of ll What was the cup? The prophets had already told you. Isaiah 51:17, the cup of his fury. Jeremiah 25:15, the wine cup of this fury, given to the nations to drink. It was the cup of the wrath of God against sin. All of it. Every century of it. And He was going to drink it to the bottom. That’s what He saw in the garden. Not the nails. The cup. Now go back to the first garden. Genesis 3. The first Adam stands in paradise. Every tree is his. One command. And he chooses his own will over God’s. Then the voice of God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam ran. Genesis 3:10. I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. The first Adam hid from God among the trees. The last Adam went into the trees to find Him. The first Adam said: My will. The last Adam fell on His face and said: Nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. Now read what God said to Adam on the way out of Eden. Genesis 3:19. In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground. Sweat. The curse was sweat. The sweat of your face, until you return to the ground. And in Gethsemane, in a garden, the doctor watched the sweat of Christ’s face fall to the ground, mixed with His blood. The curse that started in a garden ended in a garden. The last Adam took the sweat of the first one, and He bled it out onto the same ground Adam was made from. One more detail. Luke again. Luke 22:45. When he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow. For sorrow. Matthew and Mark just say they were asleep. The doctor gives the diagnosis. They weren’t lazy. They were grieving so hard their bodies shut down. Three times He came back and found them asleep. Three times He went back alone. Could ye not watch with me one hour? He asked His closest friends for one thing, one hour, on the worst night of His life. And they couldn’t give it to Him. He prayed it alone. And look at what comes after the third prayer. Matthew 26:46. Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me. He doesn’t run. He doesn’t hide in the trees. Torches are already moving across the valley, and the man who was face-down in the dirt stands up and walks toward them. The fight was over. It was won on His knees, before a single soldier arrived. Now you. Some of you are in your garden right now. You’ve prayed for the cup to pass. You’ve asked three times. Thirty times. You’ve fallen on your face over a diagnosis, a child, a marriage, a fear you can’t say out loud. And heaven hasn’t moved the cup. And your friends are asleep. Not because they don’t love you. Because they’re tired and they don’t know how bad it is. You’re praying alone. He knows that garden. He’s been in it. He sweated through it. And here’s the thing about that cup. The worst cup, the cup of wrath, the one with your sin in it - He didn’t let it pass. He drank it so you will never have to. Whatever is in your cup tonight, that isn’t in it anymore. Part l of ll Luke was a doctor. Paul calls him the beloved physician. Colossians 4:14. And Luke is the only gospel writer who records what happened to Jesus’s body that night in the garden. Luke 22:44. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. The other three gospels tell you He prayed. The doctor tells you what the prayer did to Him. There’s a name for it now. Hematidrosis. It’s rare, but it’s documented in medical literature: under extreme anguish, the tiny blood vessels around the sweat glands can rupture, and blood mixes into the sweat. It’s been recorded in soldiers before battle and in men facing execution. The body of the Son of God was breaking under the weight of what was coming, and nobody had touched Him yet. No whip. No thorns. No nails. Just a man on the ground under the olive trees, and the knowledge of what the morning would bring. Now look at where He was. Gethsemane. The name means oil press. An olive grove on the Mount of Olives, with a press for crushing the harvest, great stones bearing down on the fruit until the oil runs out. He went to the place where olives are crushed, on the night He was crushed. And look at the word Luke uses. Agony. In Greek, agōnia. It’s an athlete’s word, the strain of a wrestler at the limit of his strength. He’s not resting in prayer. He’s fighting in it. Mark says He began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy. And then Jesus said the most frightening sentence a human being has ever said about himself. Mark 14:34. My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death. The man who calmed the storm with three words, who had raised the dead, who knew the end from the beginning - on His face in the dirt, telling His friends He was so overwhelmed it felt like dying. Matthew 26:39. He went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me.

When U.S. Department of Homeland Security agents raided the DC home of far-left Islamist and Democrat U.S. House Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota last Monday, they came armed with a judicial warrant. Omar’s fellow leftists shrieked that the raid amounted to political revenge from President Trump. We do not know yet the facts contained in the agents’ affidavit that goes with any warrant, but we certainly know enough to say this: These leftists’ accusation is laughable. The more likely scenario is Omar and many others will receive a Christmas present in the form of federal indictments. The Fourth Amendment bars judges from issuing a warrant without probable cause. U.S. Magistrate Judge Matthew Sharbaugh of the District of Columbia, the DC duty judge when the Omar raid occurred, reportedly signed the warrant for Omar’s home. That means Judge Sharbaugh found probable cause evidence of at least one federal crime is inside Omar’s home. Supreme Court precedents like United States v. Leon (1984) require that an issuing judge must be neutral and detached. If anything, Judge Sharbaugh's record suggests a judge predisposed to rule against the Trump Justice Department, not for it. Before becoming a judge, Sharbaugh donated to Hillary Clinton during her losing 2016 campaign against President Trump. Sharbaugh clerked twice for Judge Robert Wilkins, a leftist appointee of President Obama, on both the D.C. U.S. District Court and the D.C. U.S. Circuit. Judge Wilkins was one of the three D.C. U.S. circuit judges rammed through by former Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid at the end of 2013 just before Republicans took control of the U.S. Senate. Omar's leftist allies in Congress claimed that President Trump is targeting Omar because of the upcoming midterms. Those allies include U.S. Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Jamie Raskin of Maryland, and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan. So which is it, exactly? Are these leftists accusing Judge Sharbaugh of joining the conspiracy? In 1942 Viktor Frankl was sent to a Nazi concentration camp. Before his arrest he was a respected psychiatrist in Vienna with a family and a manuscript that represented years of work. At the camp his head was shaved, his clothes were taken, and he was given the number 119,104. One of the hardest moments came when the Nazis found his manuscript and burned it in front of him. He had been offered a visa to the United States, but his elderly parents could not go with him. He chose to stay. He was moved through several camps, including Auschwitz and Dachau. As a physician he watched the people around him. Physical strength alone did not decide who survived. Some who looked healthy declined quickly. Others who seemed too weak continued. When prisoners lost all hope, they sometimes deteriorated rapidly. Frankl returned again and again to a line from Nietzsche: “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.” Although the manuscript was gone, he began reconstructing it in his mind. He pictured himself after the war, standing in front of students and explaining what he had seen. He also thought constantly about his wife, Tilly. He had no way of knowing whether she was alive, but remembering her helped him continue. He tried to give the same sense of purpose to other prisoners. He would ask who was waiting for them outside or what work only they could finish. When the camps were liberated in 1945, Frankl weighed 85 pounds. Then he learned that his wife, parents, and brother were all dead. The family he had stayed for was gone. Within nine days he recreated the manuscript the Nazis had burned. The book became *Man’s Search for Meaning*. Early publishers rejected it. Readers gradually found it. It became one of the most influential books of the twentieth century. Frankl remarried, raised a daughter, climbed mountains, and continued working as a psychiatrist and teacher until his death in 1997. The Nazis had taken his possessions, destroyed his work, and reduced him to a number. They had not taken away his ability to search for meaning. He entered the camps with a career, a family, and a manuscript, and emerged having lost nearly all of them.
